But when the lights go off and a black light is activated, the room becomes alive with a glowing underwater scene. Once the blood draw is done, the lights in the room go off, the black light goes on, and children are quickly distracted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s great to get that surprise reaction from the kiddos, and the adults like it too,\u201d said Heather Marble, an MCR phlebotomist. \u201cWe tell them we have a surprise for them; give them little hints.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>The idea<\/h3>\n<p>The room came to life in November 2017 after the lab sought monetary support from the MCR Volunteer Leadership Council to contract with <a href=\"https:\/\/owtowow.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ow to Wow, LLC<\/a>, which designs and paints rooms.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16077\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16077\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16077\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/05\/22043200\/owToWow_dolphin1200.webp\" alt=\"Sea creatures in black light on the wall.\" width=\"350\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/05\/22043200\/owToWow_dolphin1200.webp 667w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/05\/22043200\/owToWow_dolphin1200-200x300.webp 200w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/05\/22043200\/owToWow_dolphin1200-100x150.webp 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16077\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sea creatures come to life when the lights go out.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The MCR Volunteer Leadership Council oversees the net profit from MCR\u2019s Marketplace gift shop, and reviews and approves funding requests from various UCHealth departments that support patient and family programs in northern Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany times the items or programs funded enhance the patient experience, improve patient safety or improve patient lives,\u201d said Linda Fisher, regional director of UCHealth\u2019s volunteer program in northern Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>At UCHealth Poudre Valley Hospital, the PVH Volunteer Association Board oversees the net profit from Bella Boutique gift shop at the hospital and Unique Repeats thrift shop, 1025 Pennock Place #10, in Fort Collins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust within the last couple of years, both these councils have funded close to a half-million dollars back to UCHealth\u2019s patient and family programs in northern Colorado,\u201d Fisher said.<\/p>\n<p>For kids who have to have blood drawn, the effort from volunteers raises the wow factor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you\u2019re a kid getting your blood drawn at UCHealth, there\u2019s a wow factor to minimize the ow factor in rooms where children have their blood drawn.
