Photo: Getty Images.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One year, when Mike was 9, he held one of the balls too long and it exploded in his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was too slow. I got left with quite a few burns and I learned a tough lesson,\u201d said Mitchell who is now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/michael-mitchell-md\/\">Dr. Mitchell<\/a>, an emergency medicine physician with UCHealth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew better because my dad worked for the National Interagency Fire Center. He fought forest fires and we grew up with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smokeybear.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Smokey the Bear<\/a> and were very diligent about putting out our campfires,\u201d Mitchell said.<\/p>\n<h2>Learn from an ER doc&#8217;s fireworks safety mistakes as a boy<\/h2>\n<p>Mitchell still remembers not being able to sleep after that 4<sup>th<\/sup> of July because he was in so much pain. Still, he warns people to stay away. As an expert in emergency medicine, he\u2019s seen how dangerous they can be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see everything from cuts to burns to serious injuries,\u201d Mitchell said. \u201cThe best way to protect yourself and your family is not to use fireworks at all, especially this year because it\u2019s such a dry year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell also admits that he and his twin brother once set a neighbor\u2019s hay bales on fire when they lit a smoke ball, hit it with a tennis racket and sent it exactly to the wrong location.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLearn from my mistakes,\u201d Mitchell said.<\/p>\n<h2>Fireworks can cause major burns, severe eye injuries<\/h2>\n<p>Every year in the U.S., an average of 7 people die from injuries related to fireworks. In 2023, the most recent year for which data are available, more than 9,700 people were treated in emergency rooms for injuries related to fireworks, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpsc.gov\/Safety-Education\/Safety-Education-Centers\/Fireworks\">U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-callout-box col-xs-6 col-sm-6 right\" style=\"background-color:#dce4e7; color:#2e3b44;\">\n<p><strong>Fireworks safety tips<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Enjoy professional fireworks shows from a safe distance.<\/li>\n<li>Never allow young children to play with fireworks or set them off.<\/li>\n<li>If you insist on purchasing fireworks, never buy those packaged in brown paper. They are made for professional displays and pose a danger to individuals.<\/li>\n<li>Always supervise children. Sparklers, which many adults assume are safe, burn at 2,000 degrees and are hot enough to melt some metals.<\/li>\n<li>Never put your body near or over a fireworks device.<\/li>\n<li>Never try to re-light fireworks that haven\u2019t ignited fully.<\/li>\n<li>If you are setting off fireworks, be sure they are legal in your area and keep a bucket of water nearby.<\/li>\n<li>Many parts of Colorado are at extremely high risk for wild fires this year and have fire bans. Do not take risks that can cause fires. Click here to learn more about bans.<\/li>\n<li>Sources: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpsc.gov\/Safety-Education\/Safety-Education-Centers\/Fireworks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission<\/a> and Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Of those treated, 42% of patients suffer burns, most commonly to their hands and fingers, while 19% suffer eye injuries and 22% suffered injuries to their head, face and ears.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/nathan-hamburger-md\/\">Dr. Nathan Hamburger<\/a>, an ophthalmologist in Steamboat Springs and a member of the medical staff at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-yampa-valley-medical-center\/\">UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center<\/a>, said eye safety is important with fireworks because they can cause damage to the eyes resulting in permanent vision loss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInjuries can come from high-velocity impact with the eye, the concussive effect of explosions and\/or burns to the ocular surface,\u2019\u2019 Hamburger said. \u201cNearly half the people injured by fireworks are bystanders.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Though fireworks are banned in many cities and counties across Colorado, not everyone adheres to the rules. Hamburger said people should avoid high-velocity, projectile fireworks such as bottle rockets, roman candles, mortars and explosive fireworks including cherry bombs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you do choose to use these fireworks always read and follow warning labels, wear safety glasses, never light with people nearby, avoid looking down canisters, never let children play with fireworks,\u00a0 and never point at other people,\u2019\u2019 Hamburger said.<\/p>\n<h2>What should you do if you&#8217;re injured by fireworks?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cImmediately seek help at the emergency department.\u00a0They can determine whether you need to see an eye specialist for further care.\u00a0Do not rub your eyes.\u00a0Do not rinse your eyes.\u00a0Do not apply pressure.\u00a0Do not remove any objects that are stuck in the eye. Make sure there are sober adults supervising children.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He advised people to enjoy the holiday but \u201cbe reasonable. Don\u2019t drink and drive. Take your time if you are traveling, and be very careful at dusk, when people are in the street outside their homes and lighting off fireworks.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Hertner said Memorial sees an influx of patients after large July 4<sup>th<\/sup> gatherings. Often, people twist an ankle or fall while leaving large celebrations and end up in the emergency department with orthopedic injuries.<\/p>\n<h2>Happily enjoy fireworks from a safe distance<\/h2>\n<p>After some harrowing experiences as a child with fireworks, Mitchell enjoys professional fireworks displays with his family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll happily be watching from a safe distance. I\u2019m super cautious now.
