Photo courtesy of Jane Howell.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Bailey\u2019s cancer eventually metastasized, and he passed away on Dec. 31, 2016. Friends recounted times spent outside with Jim and suggested that memorials\u00a0might go to national parks, trails and maintenance funds or the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. But in Howell\u2019s mind, those groups already had a good amount of support.<\/p>\n<p>During this same time, the final touches were being placed on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-jan-bishop-cancer-center-steamboat-springs\/\">UCHealth Jan Bishop Cancer Center<\/a> in Steamboat Springs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJim received his treatment in the infusion center in the Medical Office Building while the new center was under construction,\u201d said Howell. \u201cIt was a cozy space, to say the least, but Jim was so well cared for there. He had a great deal of trust in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/allen-cohn-md\/\">Dr. (Allen) Cohn\u2019s<\/a> expertise, and Jim\u2019s primary care physician, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/kevin-borgerding\/\">Dr. Kevin Borgerding<\/a>, stayed very involved with his care. We\u2019re now able to offer them something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Bailey\u2019s memory, a cart now rolls between infusion bays and patient rooms, stocked with toys, mind games, coloring activities and conversation starters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn purchasing items for the cart, we selected a few items that encourage people to talk,\u201d said Ross. \u201cSome people say, \u2018We\u2019re not going to talk about it because it\u2019s scary.\u2019 But the more we talk about things, the less scary they can be. His mom, Alexis Hanes, has been receiving cancer treatment since April 2018 at the Jan Bishop Cancer Center. There, she\u2019s under the care of Dr. Cohn; she also receives care from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/christopher-lieu-md-cancer-oncology\/\">Dr. Christopher Lieu<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-university-of-colorado-cancer-center-anschutz\/\">UCHealth Cancer Care \u2013 Anschutz Medical Campus \u2013 University of Colorado Cancer Center.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Velardo initially came with Hanes, but had a difficult time. Then Hanes found out about the activity cart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlexander came with me yesterday,\u201d she said, as did her father. \u201cYesterday went well enough that he wanted to come back with me today. He loves playing with the magnetic tiles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made a hospital for animals,\u201d said Velardo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf one child or patient benefits from it (the cart), then we know it was the right thing to do in Jim\u2019s memory,\u201d said Howell.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Jim Bailey was an avid outdoorsman.
