But it doesn\u2019t affect just teens. Dr. Ian Tullberg explains what to look for in children who may have depression or anxiety.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To identify depression in a child, \u201clook at what\u2019s normal. For really little kids, it\u2019s normal to be afraid of strangers. As they get older, some kids are afraid of storms or the dark. Some are afraid of monsters under the bed. Or they begin to understand about death. It\u2019s a progressive thing, as they develop,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>When it becomes abnormal<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The problem manifests when it when it becomes abnormal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s talk about anxiety. Notice if they\u2019re starting to avoid certain people, activities or things they used to like, for some unknown reason,\u2019\u2019 Dr. Tullberg said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s say you\u2019re driving them to sports practice and traffic is heavy. They start worrying about what could go wrong, that they\u2019ll be late for practice. You say, \u2018You don\u2019t need to worry about that. I\u2019m the parent, so I\u2019ll worry about it.\u2019 But that doesn\u2019t help. There are still anxious. Why?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Tullberg said that if a child has distress that is constant and persistent, then there is a trigger and something is going on.<\/p>\n<p>Parents should watch for any big change in a child\u2019s sleeping habits \u2013 either too much or too little or wanting to sleep with the parents all of a sudden. If it\u2019s a change from the normal, consider it a sign that something\u2019s amiss, he said.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Look for physical symptoms<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cOne thing I tell patients, even adults, is that anxiety and stress are things we don\u2019t give enough credit to,\u201d he said. \u201cThese things can affect us in such a physical way \u2013 headaches and stomach pains, for example.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16988\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16988\" style=\"width: 189px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16988\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/07\/12090746\/Capture.webp\" alt=\"A photo of Dr. Ian tullberg\" width=\"189\" height=\"247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/07\/12090746\/Capture.webp 189w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/07\/12090746\/Capture-115x150.webp 115w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 189px) 100vw, 189px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16988\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Ian Tullberg<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If something can\u2019t be medically explained, stress and anxiety can be the cause \u201cand it\u2019s very real,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I tell parents that a child\u2019s symptoms come from stress or anxiety, a lot of them won\u2019t believe me,\u201d he said, \u201cbut parents should not brush these things off or tell kids they should not feel that way. \u201c<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Depression<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Depression has similar symptoms, but more intense, as a general rule.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCertainly it\u2019s different, but there are symptoms you really want to look out for. Are you ready for this? The list is long.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA depressed or irritable mood is a sign. Difficulty sleeping or concentrating. If their grades suffer, especially if it\u2019s sudden, that could indicate a problem. If they\u2019re getting into trouble at school or refusing to go to school, there\u2019s usually a reason.\u00a0 Changes in eating habits \u2013 too much or too little \u2013 are a sign. Being angry, being mad all the time. Or big mood swings. Feelings of worthlessness, frequent sadness or crying. Withdrawing from friends or activities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some children also experience a compete loss of energy, low self-esteem, or even talk about suicide or hurting others, he added. \u201cTake it seriously. Kids can kill themselves, or seriously hurt themselves or others.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Bullying is often blamed for these issues<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cBullying is not just one of those things done in person,\u201d Tullberg said. \u201cThe cyberbullying today is rampant. Parents have to be on top of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Tullberg sees it first-hand, with children ages 9 and 11, and refuses to let them be on Facebook or other social media until they are older \u2013 maybe 18.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What can be done about anxiety and depression in children?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cIf parents think their child is suffering from anxiety or depression, first talk to them. Don\u2019t come to your own conclusions without doing that. Maybe there\u2019s a specific situation causing it. If you have a good, open relationship with them, you\u2019d be surprised how often they may tell you the truth if you just ask.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But if your conversations aren\u2019t productive, or they don\u2019t want to talk to you about it, \u201cfind someone else to talk to \u2013 their pediatrician, maybe. Then they know it will be confidential,\u201d he suggested.<\/p>\n<p>But don\u2019t ignore it, he warned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeek professional help somehow, maybe a school counselor.
