Photo by UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ken and Sheree Kolar\u2019s end of life plan is almost reminiscent of how <em>The Notebook <\/em>ends. They want to toast each other, go to bed together and die together.<\/p>\n<p>Ken suffering a \u201cwidow maker\u201d heart attack would have put a major crimp in that plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he would have died, you might as well have buried me with him,\u201d said Sheree.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Heart burn vs. heart attack<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Ken and Sheree have been married for 40 years and have raised two sons, Kyle and Brandon. Ken and Sheree live in Mesquite, Nev., but have had a presence in Steamboat Springs, Colo. for more than 30 years. Their son, Brandon, now lives in the area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would come to Steamboat Springs when the boys were little. Once we drove through Craig, Colo. you can see Mt. Werner in the distance,\u201d said Sheree. \u201cIt\u2019s a special place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The summer of 2018 found them house sitting near Clark, Colo., a small community about 30 minutes north of Steamboat Springs. The Fourth of July had come and gone when Ken began feeling what he thought was a bout of heartburn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a little pain in my chest and some shortness of breath here and there that lasted a few days,\u201d said Ken. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t until I searched \u2018heart burn vs. heart attack\u2019 and saw that it could be a heart attack that I mentioned something to Sheree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ken suggested that perhaps they make an appointment for the next morning to get things checked out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen he said \u2018heart,\u2019 we went immediately,\u201d said Sheree.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>They swarmed like bees<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When they arrived at the emergency department at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-yampa-valley-medical-center\/\">UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center<\/a> in Steamboat Springs and told the admissions representative that Ken was having chest pains, Sheree said a swarm of people immediately surrounded her husband.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was like a beehive,\u201d she said. \u201cThey immediately started their protocols and tests to find out what was going on and how they could help Ken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey gave me an aspirin to get my blood flowing,\u201d said Ken. \u201cI started having some cold sweats. That\u2019s the last thing I remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ken\u2019s chest rose up and then monitor alarms started going off. Photo by UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never seen a doctor move so quickly,\u201d said Sheree about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/laila-w-powers-md\/\">Dr. Laila Powers\u2019<\/a> response. \u201cShe was at his side in an instant. When she couldn\u2019t find a pulse, she started CPR immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A code was called, and Ken was shocked for Vfib. CRP was resumed, and he began breathing on his own after approximately three minutes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs with any emergency, it\u2019s a team approach,\u201d said Powers. \u201cWe had great support from nurses from the post-anesthesia care unit, respiratory therapy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/jason-jurva-md-cardiovascular-disease\/\">Dr. [Jason] Jurva<\/a>, the cardiologist who was on call, as well as aeromedical transfer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While all this was taking place, Sheree buried her head in a pillow, overcome with emotions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAly, one of his nurses, kept coming over to me as they were working on him to let me know what was going on,\u201d she said. \u201cOnce they had Ken back \u2013 I\u2019ll never forget this \u2013 she grabbed me by the arms and looked into my eyes and said, \u2018Sheree, he\u2019s alive. He\u2019s talking and he\u2019s going to be ok.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The repeat EKG showed a heart attack. Powers discussed the benefits and risks of thrombolytics, or clot busting medication, with Ken and Sheree and proceeded to administer it. A helicopter arrived shortly after that to transfer Ken to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-medical-center-of-the-rockies\/\">UCHealth Medical Center of the Rockies<\/a> in Loveland, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/phil-dattilo-md-cardiology\/\">Dr. Phil Dattilo<\/a> placed two stents.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Changes ahead<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>After recovering there for a few days, Sheree drove Ken back to Clark.<\/p>\n<p>Less than two weeks after Ken\u2019s heart attack, he and Sheree found themselves in Jurva\u2019s Steamboat Springs office. Photo by UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cHe said Ken\u2019s outlook was good as far as heart damage and how things looked for the future,\u201d said Sheree.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollow-up in the clinical setting is important to make sure the patient has tolerated not only the procedure, but all the medical changes they\u2019re now facing,\u201d said Jurva. \u201cKen started a number of medications following his heart attack \u2013 blood thinners, cholesterol medication, blood pressure medication. We closely monitor how he\u2019s doing on them for the first few weeks post-heart attack to ensure they\u2019re doing what they need to be doing for his health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to medication prescriptions, Jurva prescribed a visit with Laura Stout, a registered dietitian nutritionist at Yampa Valley Medical Center, as well as cardiac rehab sessions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMedication can only do so much. There are other components to a successful recovery,\u201d said Jurva. \u201cKen needs to be mindful of what is heart healthy to eat. He needs to limit refined carbs and grains, while increasing fresh produce. An adequate intake of fish and vegetable-based fats is also important, something that most of us lack in a general diet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI exercised some in the past, but I\u2019d always been blessed with a fast metabolism, so I enjoyed lots of cheese, prepared and processed foods, pretty much whatever I wanted,\u201d said Ken.\u00a0 \u201cMy dad had a heart attack at 95. I\u2019m 65. Photo by UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re open to these suggestions because we both want to live,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The task of getting Ken to feel safe and trust his heart again fell to Susan Cowan, the coordinator of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-cardiac-rehabilitation-yampa-valley-medical-center-steamboat-springs\/\">UCHealth Cardiac Rehabilitation<\/a> at YVMC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHigh blood pressure and high cholesterol were the risk factors we identified with Ken,\u201d said Cowan. \u201cThose can both be impacted by exercise, so we started a training program that would allow him to return to his active lifestyle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another benefit to cardiac rehab? Being surrounded by others going through the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKen was able to meet many other patients while exercising,\u201d said Cowan. \u201cThey\u2019re able to share their individual experiences with each other. They really become a support network.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Traveling the road of life<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When Ken and Sheree retire in the near future, they\u2019ll embark on a \u201ctwo-to 10-year road trip, however long it takes,\u201d as they motorhome throughout the northeast and northwest parts of the country. We\u2019ll travel and see what we want to see and be there as long as we want to be there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis episode of Ken\u2019s will likely cause us to land here (in Steamboat) \u2013 maybe six months here, six months in the desert,\u201d said Sheree.<\/p>\n<p>Thinking back over the events that occurred, Ken and Sheree come back to the same words to describe YVMC, its doctors and staff \u2013 community, compassion, responsive, grateful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone was incredible,\u201d said Sheree. \u201cIn most emergency rooms, it\u2019s, \u2018Take a seat, we\u2019ll be with you in a minute.\u2019 Not here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey cared for Sheree as much as they cared for me,\u201d said Ken. \u201cThere were angels, for sure.
