Photo by Getty Images.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From constant throbbing to extreme pressure, headaches can take many different forms.<\/p>\n<p>But one thing stays the same: many people experience them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHeadaches are one of the most common reasons for someone to visit a primary care office or ER,\u201d said Dr. Rebecca Levin, a family medicine physician in Steamboat Springs and a member of the medical staff at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-yampa-valley-medical-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center<\/a>. \u201cBut they should be addressed, especially if they present with any red flags.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Below, Levin outlines types of headaches and how they\u2019re treated.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Types of headaches<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>Migraines <\/em>are debilitating headaches that involve throbbing pain that is usually one-sided and gets worse over several hours. Nausea and sensitivity to light and sound are also common.<\/p>\n<p>People may experience an \u201caura\u201d which can manifest as bright spots, flashing and zigzagging lines, or ringing in the ears before the migraine starts.<\/p>\n<p>With <em>tension headaches<\/em>, pain is felt on both sides of the head and causes intense pressure across the forehead. \u201cSome people complain about it being like a vicelike grip around your head,\u201d Levin said.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re using a lot of Tylenol or ibuprofen to control your headaches, you might end up with a <em>medication overuse headache<\/em> that doesn\u2019t subside. \u201cUsing too much over-the-counter medication can actually backfire and make your headaches worse,\u201d Levin said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23374\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23374\" style=\"width: 175px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23374\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/04\/02103746\/Rebecca-Levin-Photo.webp\" alt=\"This is a photo of Dr. Rebecca Levin.\" width=\"175\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/04\/02103746\/Rebecca-Levin-Photo.webp 714w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/04\/02103746\/Rebecca-Levin-Photo-214x300.webp 214w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/04\/02103746\/Rebecca-Levin-Photo-107x150.webp 107w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/04\/02103746\/Rebecca-Levin-Photo-200x280.webp 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 175px) 100vw, 175px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23374\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Rebecca Levin is a family medicine physician in Steambaot Springs and a member of the medical staff at UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center. Photo by UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Finally, <em>emergency headaches<\/em> are accompanied by the following symptoms and should be evaluated by a medical professional immediately:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fever, new neck pain or confusion along with a headache could be due to an infection or meningitis.<\/li>\n<li>A headache with neurological changes, such as vision changes, slurred speech, weakness or numbness, and trouble walking could be a sign of a stroke.<\/li>\n<li>An extremely painful, \u201cworst of your life\u201d headache that comes on quickly could signal a hemorrhage.<\/li>\n<li>Both minor and traumatic injuries that result in a headache should be reviewed, as these symptoms could be signs of a concussion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Causes<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Headaches can be triggered by stress, skipping meals, having too little or too much caffeine, poor sleep, neck tension or tightness, alcohol, some drinks and foods (such as red wine or certain types of cheese), hormonal changes and even pressure changes due to weather.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of factors can play into headaches,\u201d Levin said. \u201cI always like to tick through that list with a patient and see if that helps us figure out what could be contributing to headaches in their daily life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also a genetic component: patients with a family history of headaches may be more likely to experience them.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Treatment<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Resting in a dark room or taking acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help, though you should check that any over-the-counter medication is safe for you.<\/p>\n<p>If simple steps aren\u2019t enough, a prescription medication may be helpful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody is different,\u201d Levin said. \u201cThe bottom line is your doctor can help find the best treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Levin also recommends limiting alcohol consumption, eating and sleeping at regular times, exercising several times a week, practicing stress reduction techniques such as meditation, taking breaks from computer screens, making sure your vision screens are up-to-date and staying hydrated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like to have my patients make a headache diary,\u201d Levin said. \u201cThey record when they have a headache, what made it worse or better and what happened right before. That can help us realize, \u2018Oh, you\u2019re always getting a headache after you drink red wine. That could be a trigger for you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t hesitate to see your primary care provider.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny time someone has new headaches, they should be evaluated,\u201d Levin said. \u201cAnd if you have headaches that are happening on a regular basis and interfering with your daily life, you should come in.
