Let\u2019s take them one by one.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Baseball and softball<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re looking at several different types of injuries that come from throwing (the ball) \u2013 like elbow sprains or \u2018softball elbow,\u2019\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/ian-r-tullberg-md-family-medicine\/\">Dr. Ian Tullberg<\/a>, medical director of urgent care for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/about\/uchealth-medical-group-providers\/\">UCHealth Medical Group<\/a>. \u201cWe also see a few other things, such as sprains and strains, mostly of ankles. That\u2019s a big one. Also we see contusions and bruising from getting hit by a ball or a person.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Soccer<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cKnee and ankle injuries are the biggest ones, more ankles than anything. Every so often we see a head injury, like a concussion, but they\u2019re not as common as sprains,\u201d said Tullberg, who oversees 17 urgent care centers in Colorado.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Tennis<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cYou can get tennis elbow, thus the name. Or we see a lot of ankle sprains as well. Tennis elbow is an inflammation of the tendons in the elbow, caused by repetitive motion.\u201d Because of the lateral way tennis players often have to move, \u201cankles also seem to be a problem. \u201c<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Track &amp; Field<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cOh where do I start on this one?\u201d said Tullberg. \u201cIt really depends on the sport.\u00a0 There are certainly a lot of strains, especially large muscle strains, like hamstrings. We see that with runners. Some field events, like discus, shot put or pole vaulting, tend to cause back strains and such. They require a lot of torque.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He speaks from experience \u2013 a pole vaulter since his teens, he\u2019s had more than his share of injuries, he said.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What are the most serious injuries connected with these sports? <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cAnything involving the brain, like concussions,\u201d are cause for concern. And some ankle injuries \u201ccan end a career, or at least mean you\u2019ll never play that sport again,\u201d he added.\u00a0 Occasionally, players experience fractures, but they\u2019re not as common in these sports as in, say, skiing.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>How can they be prevented?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cWell, the No. 1 prevention is not to play the sport, but I wouldn\u2019t ever recommend that to anyone,\u201d he said. \u201cI mean, there\u2019s danger in walking through a crosswalk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Proper protective gear is \u201chigh on the list\u201d of things to do. \u00a0\u201cAnd make sure protective gear fits properly. Wear it all the time, even at practice. Be vigilant. Watch what you\u2019re doing or what your child is doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the biggest factor in protecting yourself from injury is being fit in the first place, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet in shape before the season starts,\u2019\u201d he recommended. \u201cBetter yet, stay in shape year \u2018round. Working out, running and doing exercise keep your body ready to play.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>Injuries are almost inevitable if you play a sport enough, but when is it time for an ice pack and an aspirin and when is it time to visit the urgent care center?<\/p>\n<p>Unless you\u2019re bleeding or have a broken bone, or a laceration that might need stitches, you\u2019re probably OK with the former, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut that\u2019s a tough call,\u201d he added. \u201cA good rule of thumb is, if you can\u2019t walk or have problems walking, it would be a good idea to be seen\u201d by a physician, he said. \u201cLet a medical professional check you out. Yes, he may give you an ice pack and an aspirin, but at least you\u2019ll know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, \u201cif you turned your ankle but still can finish the game, you probably don\u2019t need to do anything,\u201d but you can look it up online and see what is suggested, he said. Use a reputable site, including a medical school site, he added.<\/p>\n<p>If a web site has lots of ads, steer clear of it, he suggested.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, spring is here and so are those activities.
