Take time for yourself. Do something that makes you smile or brings you pleasure. Take a walk, read a book, get a massage, or even spend a few minutes stretching.<\/p>\n<p>Your emotional health is directly tied to your physical health, said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/elizabeth-de-md\/\">Dr. Elizabeth De<\/a>, a primary care physician now practicing at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-steele-street-primary-care-cherry-creek\/\">UCHealth Primary Care Clinic \u2013 Steele Street<\/a>, in Denver. Photo by Getty Images.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>So she asks her patients who come in for a wellness check or annual physical some direct questions about their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1114432\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emotional well-being<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really started doing it years ago,\u201d she said. \u201cI do it with all my well visits. I ask them what they are doing for themselves, for \u2018me time,\u2019 as I call it. I started seeing lots of anxiety and depression \u2013 in the top 5, if not the top 3, complaints. I noticed that the age (for these issues) was getting younger and younger. Teens sometimes come in only for anxiety and depression. Lots of teens are asking for anxiety medications. It makes me sad.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Emotional stress<\/h3>\n<p>As a mother of school-aged children herself, this concerns De. But it\u2019s not just children who are experiencing physical symptoms from emotional stress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the workforce situation being what it is \u2026 where working more is considered better, and people take pride in that,\u201d the attendant stress is \u201cstarting to affect people physically,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n<p>We tend to forget \u201chow intimately mental health is connected to physical health,\u201d she said. \u201cA lot of physical complaints are related to our emotional health,\u201d mainly fatigue, inability to sleep, irritability, joint pains and body aches.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt all stems back to not taking care of ourselves emotionally,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She asks her patients, \u201cWhat are you doing for yourself? What gives you joy? What makes you smile? What gives you pleasure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She is surprised at how often the patients have to sit and think about it. Photo by Getty Images.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>People \u201care too busy taking care of their kids, just getting through life, just trying to keep their heads above water. They forget to take care of themselves, to enjoy life, to take a pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h3>Caring for the caretakers<\/h3>\n<p>People who are caretakers \u2013 of their children, their parents, or others \u2013 need to take care of themselves first, she said. \u201cIf you don\u2019t, then you can\u2019t be a good caregiver.\u201d Parents, especially, tend to put their own needs low on the list of priorities, and if it goes on too long, can have physical consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When she asks patients her pointed questions, she often finds their answers revealing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt usually explains most of their symptoms, to be honest,\u201d she said. Things like fatigue, general achiness and irritability are often exacerbated by life crises \u2013 going through a divorce, the death of a parent, or problems with a child.<\/p>\n<p>She often recommends that patients take steps to enhance their emotional health \u2013 go to the gym, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/home-spa-day\/\">get a massage<\/a>, take a walk with the dog, or read a book where they won\u2019t be interrupted.<\/p>\n<h3>Doctor&#8217;s orders<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25905\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25905\" style=\"width: 179px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25905\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/08\/13092434\/dr.-de.webp\" alt=\"Dr. Elizabeth De\" width=\"179\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/08\/13092434\/dr.-de.webp 179w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/08\/13092434\/dr.-de-107x150.webp 107w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 179px) 100vw, 179px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-25905\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Elizabeth De<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ll say, \u2018I don\u2019t have time to go to the gym, or do any of those other things\u2019, and I tell them, \u2018It\u2019s doctor\u2019s orders.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They often come back to her and say \u201cWhen I do exercise, I feel a lot better! Or if I just sit in my room and read for a while, I\u2019m not as irritable. I don\u2019t yell at my kids as much, or get as grumpy with my spouse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The power of movement has been proven to be so beneficial that even some schools are now incorporating it into the curriculum \u2013 yoga or stretching for children helps them perform better during the school day, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExercise is a huge remedy. When you exercise you get the endorphins going and get your blood pumping, and you\u2019ll feel so much better afterwards. Do it in the morning, because it gets things going. Evening exercise might make it hard to sleep. A lot of workplaces now have gyms, so you can work out at lunch. You don\u2019t have to work up a sweat for it to be beneficial.\u00a0 Take a walk, do some stretching, sign up for a yoga class, whatever is available.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Changing the mindset<\/h3>\n<p>The biggest \u2014 and sometimes hardest \u2014 thing is changing the mindset \u201cthat it\u2019s OK to sometimes put yourself first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Medical professionals need to remember that, too, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course, when we are involved in direct patient care, the patient always come first. However, to maximize our performance as healthcare providers we have to take care of ourselves first,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>She recommends that everyone do something for themselves every day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFind what you enjoy \u2026 whatever makes you happy. If you have kids, take turns letting one spouse look after them for an hour or two while the other one gets to go do something they like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So go for a run, play a game of badminton, work on your needlepoint, kick back, close your eyes and listen to your favorite music. Just for an hour every day. You\u2019ll feel better.<\/p>\n<p>After all, it\u2019s doctor\u2019s orders.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Want to be healthy?
