Then you might want to consider adding acupuncture to your winter routine.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28202\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28202\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28202 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/12\/16093915\/acupuncturetiny-e1578077378989.webp\" alt=\"A man receives acupuncture in the area of his shoulder blades as there are benefits of acupuncture in winter.\" width=\"640\" height=\"428\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/12\/16093915\/acupuncturetiny-e1578077378989.webp 640w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/12\/16093915\/acupuncturetiny-e1578077378989-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/12\/16093915\/acupuncturetiny-e1578077378989-150x100.webp 150w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/12\/16093915\/acupuncturetiny-e1578077378989-200x133.webp 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28202\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kelley McDaneld, an acupuncturist at UCHealth Integrative Medical Clinic in Steamboat Springs, says acupuncture in winter can help some people feel better.\u00a0Photo: Getty Images.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Below, Kelley McDaneld, a licensed acupuncturist with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-integrative-medicine-clinic-steamboat-springs\/\">UCHealth Integrative Medicine Clinic in Steamboat Springs<\/a>, describes how acupuncture may be helpful for you during the long,\u00a0cold months.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Immune system<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Acupuncture has been shown for some individuals to boost the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5391063\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> immune system<\/a>, which helps prevent colds, the flu and other illnesses that are more common in winter months.<\/p>\n<p>It works for some, in part, because acupuncture may increase white blood cell counts \u2013 specifically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18227912\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T-cell counts<\/a> \u2013 which are an important component of the immune system, while also possibly decreasing inflammation throughout the body.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne hypothesis for why that happens is that when the needles are inserted, you\u2019re creating a little irritation that the immune system responds to,\u201d McDaneld said.<\/p>\n<p>Regular acupuncture may also\u00a0prevent an illness from taking hold, especially when done 12 to 24 hours after the first sign of sickness.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Improving mood<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAcupuncture has been shown to increase endorphins in the body, and that naturally boosts your mood. It can increase the release of neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine, which also help,\u201d McDaneld said.<\/p>\n<p>In Chinese medicine, mild cases of depression are attributed to a stagnation of \u201cqi\u201d or \u201cchi,\u201d also called the life-force or energy, and acupuncture may\u00a0help get that qi moving.<\/p>\n<p>Every individual reacts differently to acupuncture, so benefits may vary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt depends on the person,\u201d McDaneld said. \u201cSome people really respond, while others don\u2019t as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Decreasing stress<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In traditional Chinese medicine, winter months are considered a good time to rest and let the body rejuvenate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe winter season in Chinese medicine is the time to slow down, to replenish your energy, to store up for the upcoming spring and summer months,\u201d McDaneld said. \u201cIt\u2019s not very often that people take an hour out of their day to mindfully rest. That really calms the nervous system overall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Decreasing stress not only helps you feel better, but it also decreases risk of illness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStress depletes qi, or one\u2019s energy stores, but by reducing stress, you\u2019re more resilient and stress is less likely to take a toll,\u201d McDaneld said.<\/p>\n<p>If you decide to try acupuncture and are not dealing with a specific injury or illness, McDaneld recommends scheduling a session once a week for two or three weeks, then spacing sessions out further. It\u2019s ideal to try acupuncture first when you\u2019re well, so you and your practitioner understand how your body reacts to the treatment.<\/p>\n<p>And don\u2019t forget to find other ways to slow down and rest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople here tend to really push their bodies all seasons of the year, and they don\u2019t tend to allow time for rest and rejuvenation. In the long-term, that can be detrimental,\u201d McDaneld said. \u201cIt\u2019s all about moderation and listening to your body.
