As adults, we were delighted to find out they also had CDs and DVDs. Photo: Thinkstock.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Library 21C has a video and audio recording studio, with technical help when it comes to, well, all the technical stuff. The Sand Creek Library, in southeastern Colorado Springs, has an audio recording studio.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ve been used for commercial, instructional and music videos. They even have some musical instruments, like keyboards, available for use. And there\u2019s an orientation class you take to help you learn how to use the equipment, as well as classes in such things as lighting, sound engineering and video editing.<\/p>\n<p>One library patron recorded her first album, says Abby Simpson, one of the library\u2019s regional managers.<\/p>\n<p>The recording studios are booked for almost every hour they are open, and they\u2019d extend hours if they had the staff, says Chief Librarian and CEO John Spears.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Making Magic<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Another creative outlet can be experienced at the \u201cmaker spaces\u201d at Pikes Peak Library District&#8217;s 21C, Sand Creek and East libraries. These rooms are set aside for everything from painting large canvases to sewing costumes, with access to specialized sewing machines, computerized engraving machine.\u00a0 There\u2019s even a pottery kiln at the Sand Creek site and a 3-D printer. Photo courtesy of PPLD.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe even had someone come in and create their own board game,\u201d says Amy Rodda, head of the Adult Services Division.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of my favorite things is when someone comes in with something they need to replicate,\u201d says Joanna Rendon, the library\u2019s head of young adult services.<br \/>\n\u201cMy favorite story is about a young man who was deaf and blind and had this plastic device that helped him communicate. He had broken it and we were able to help him replicate it. It almost makes me cry to talk about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And not only do the users of the spaces get help from staff members, \u201cthe other \u2018makers\u2019 also try to help them. It becomes a community project,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Lots of Learning<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Many of the library programs are held in open spaces, to invite everyone in, Spears said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou might see people making Mother\u2019s Day cards, and there are businessmen from downtown as well as homeless guys working side by side. Photo courtesy of PPLD.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There are several ways a high-school drop-out can go back and get a GED \u2013 an equivalency to a high school degree. But the library\u2019s Career Online High School offers a real diploma.<\/p>\n<p>The library has offered adult education classes, including ESL tutoring, for 40 years, and the GED is among them, but this program is more comprehensive and accredited, Spears says. Coaches and tutoring are available, and those who qualify for the course must complete it in 18 months. Their first graduate, in December 2017, did it in six months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was amazing,\u201d Spears says. Pikes Peak Library District \u201cprobably has one of the largest adult education programs of any library in the U.S.,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Creating Community<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The library district also is the only one in Colorado participating in the national <a href=\"https:\/\/ppymca.org\/about\/safe-place-and-community-resources\/?highlight=safe%20place\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Safe Place program<\/a>.\u00a0 If someone comes into a library <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/uchealth-dedicates-more-than-100-million-for-behavioral-health-care\/\">looking for help<\/a>, they\u2019ll get it, he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we can\u2019t help them, we know who can,\u201d he adds. Why is it reaching out to suicidal teens? Why does it have a Family Place at some libraries where children can play and surreptitiously be evaluated for developmental skills while parents share support for each other\u2019s issues? Why does it cater to the military population like never before?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all related,\u2019 Spears says. \u201cIt\u2019s all part of our core mission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the library\u2019s official mission statement is: \u201cProviding resources and opportunities that impact individual lives and build community. \u00a0Seek. Engage.
