With its roots in 16<sup>th<\/sup> century Scotland, the sport has experienced new popularity since it was added as an Olympic competition in 1998 and is currently one of the fastest-growing winter sports, says Paula Bloom, president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/coloradocurling.org\/index.php\/curling\/learn-to-curl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Broadmoor Curling Club in Colorado Springs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is curling?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Well, Wikipedia defines it (accurately, she said) as: \u201ca sport in which players slide polished granite stone on a sheet of ice toward a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles (think of a bull\u2019s-eye). It is related to games like bowling and shuffleboard. Two teams, each with four players, take turns sliding heavy (42-pound) stones, also called <em>rocks<\/em>, across the ice curling sheet toward the target marked on the ice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach team has eight stones, with each player throwing two. The purpose is to accumulate the highest score for a <em>game<\/em>; points are scored for the stones resting closest to the center.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bloom has been playing for over a decade \u2013 since she was 42. Retired from the U.S. Navy, she was invited to come try it by her coworker at NORAD. One session and she was hooked.<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-callout-box col-xs-12 col-sm-6 right\" style=\"background-color:#dce4e7; color:#2e3b44;\">Find free things to do in Colorado Springs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/five-free-things-to-do-in-colorado-springs\/\">here<\/a> or winter activities in Colorado Springs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/things-to-do-in-colorado-springs-in-the-winter\/\">here<\/a>.<\/div>\n<p>The 2\u00bd-hour <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/coloradocurling.org\/index.php\/club-events\/event-registrations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Learn to Curl session<\/a> she took \u2013 one the club offers regularly to interested potential players \u2013 includes learning how to \u201cthrow\u201d (really slide) the stone, how to \u201csweep\u201d to give it direction and how to score. The first session also includes a chance to play a game or two. A Learn to Curl session costs $35. You walk with the stone up and down the ice, or you sweep in front of it to guide it and \u201cthat\u2019s some great cardio exercise,\u201d she said. It\u2019s also a mental challenge, with strategy and thought going into every move.<\/p>\n<p>All ages can play, \u201cfrom 8 to 80,\u201d she said. Though the stones weigh quite a bit, there are kid-sized ones that only tip the scales at 22 pounds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s one of the few sports a whole family can play together,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also a game tailored to people with limitations.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s injured both of her ACLs, has bad knees and has back issues, but she can still play. An assistance tool called a curling delivery device can make it possible for just about anyone to play, including folks in wheelchairs. There are also adaptations for people who are blind or hard of hearing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t do soccer or volleyball, but I can do this,\u201d Bloom said. \u201cIf you have limitations, just talk to your doctor first.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Curling for all interest levels<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Participants can do the sport just for fun or they can get very competitive, she added. The local club offers a tournament annually and there are other clubs around the state \u2013 in Denver, Fort Collins, Aspen and Telluride, among others \u2013 that offer competitive events. It gets them out of the house, doing something with other people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the club\u2019s website, it tells you when the next Learn to Curl sessions are being offered, what to wear and how to prepare.\u00a0 (The club provides the equipment, so there\u2019s no need to go buy anything.) It also lists fees for memberships or individual sessions.
