Photo: Getty Images.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Flu is striking people throughout Colorado now, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colorado.gov\/pacific\/cdphe\/influenza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more than 900 hospitalizations<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canoncitydailyrecord.com\/2020\/01\/08\/person-dies-at-st-thomas-more-hospital-from-complications-of-flu\/\">one death of an older adult in Ca\u00f1on City<\/a>, but it\u2019s not too late to get your vaccine.<br \/>\n<div class=\"su-callout-box col-xs-6 col-sm-6 right\" style=\"background-color:#dce4e7; color:#2e3b44;\">\n<p><strong>Feel like you have the flu? You can pay a flat fee instead.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/michelle-barron-md-infectious-disease\/\">Dr. Michelle Barron<\/a>, an expert in contagious diseases at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-university-of-colorado-hospital-uch\/\">UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital,<\/a> said it\u2019s been a strange flu season. A strain of flu, Influenza B, has been rampant this year, and it\u2019s been especially hard on children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s everywhere, and it\u2019s an anomaly,\u201d Barron said.<\/p>\n<p>Typically, she said, a different strain, Influenza A, tends to sicken people from November through February, then Influenza B can surface late in the flu season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t usually pay attention to \u2018B,\u2019 but it\u2019s here and causing a fair number of hospitalizations. The numbers are on the rise,\u201d Barron said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a pretty severe year,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>CDC: flu season<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Across the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reporting that nearly 10 million people have become sick with the flu and about 4,800 have died, including 32 children.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23844\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23844\" style=\"width: 194px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23844 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/05\/02094317\/dr.michellebaron.webp\" alt=\"A photo of Dr. Michelle Barron\" width=\"194\" height=\"255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/05\/02094317\/dr.michellebaron.webp 194w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/05\/02094317\/dr.michellebaron-114x150.webp 114w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23844\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The 2020 flu season has been tough because Influenza B has been rampant. Photo: UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In Colorado, so far, no child deaths tied to the flu have been reported, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colorado.gov\/pacific\/cdphe\/influenza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But Barron wants to convey a critical message: \u201cIt\u2019s not too late to get a flu shot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Influenza may continue to sicken people well into the spring.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Flu season 2020: Is flu season over?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This year\u2019s outbreak has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colorado.gov\/pacific\/cdphe\/influenza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">most severe<\/a> in Adams and Arapahoe Counties in the Denver area, Alamosa and other parts of the San Luis Valley in Southern Colorado, Jackson County in northern Colorado and Gunnison and Chaffee Counties in the western part of the state. (Click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colorado.gov\/pacific\/cdphe\/influenza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> to see a map showing hospitalizations in Colorado by county.)<\/p>\n<p>While it takes about two weeks for the flu vaccine to fully take effect, people who get their vaccines now can still get protection during a key time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t think of the flu as dying down until March or April,\u201d Barron said.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Flu shot effectiveness and prevention<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Both children and adults need to get a flu vaccine every year. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/be-prepared-with-flu-shot-how-to-stay-healthy-this-season\/\">This year\u2019s flu shot<\/a> protects against both the Influenza A and B strains. Photo: Getty Images.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/influenza-basic-facts-and-illness-prevention\/\">Prevention<\/a>, hand washing and good self-care are key to staying healthy, Barron said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet your shot. Cover your cough. Be diligent about washing hands and cleaning surfaces,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Barron said it\u2019s particularly important to clean areas that many people share.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou shed flu virus up to three days before you have symptoms. It can be on your hands, then on surfaces. Luckily, we\u2019re past the holidays when you see a lot of group bowls of candy,\u201d Barron said. \u201cBut, most of us are indoors. Think about cleaning door knobs and surfaces in common areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unlike stomach viruses like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/norovirus-and-hand-sanitizer\/\">norovirus \u2013 which have also sickened many people in Colorado this winter<\/a> \u2013 hand sanitizers can help prevent the spread of influenza. (Click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/norovirus-and-hand-sanitizer\/\">here<\/a> to learn why hand sanitizer can\u2019t stop the spread of norovirus.)<\/p>\n<p>People also tend to carry their phones with them everywhere and rarely clean them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the subtle things we don\u2019t notice,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>To stay healthy year-round, Barron emphasizes the importance of self-care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay hydrated. Be good to yourself. Get adequate sleep. Make sure you\u2019re eating good foods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables can contribute to overall health. Barron said there\u2019s no evidence that taking Vitamin C can ward off flu or colds, but vitamins won\u2019t cause any harm. Keeping your health top of mind is the best way to start the year off healthy and happy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the holidays, people tend to go into stress mode.
