She couldn\u2019t keep anything down and decided to see a doctor. The problem? Gellert, 44, has asthma and an underlying gastrointestinal condition that she has battled since 2011.<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-callout-box col-xs-6 col-sm-6 right\" style=\"background-color:#dce4e7; color:#2e3b44;\">\n<p><strong>Scheduling a Video Visit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nearly 100 primary care and specialty clinics have been offering virtual care for about a year and UCHealth\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/services\/virtual-urgent-care\/\">Virtual Urgent Care<\/a> has grown in popularity during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is a <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/services\/video-appointment\/\"><strong>Video Visit<\/strong><\/a><strong>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Providers see a patient through a secure video and audio chat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do <\/strong><strong>Video Visit<\/strong><strong> work?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Patients with access to a smart phone, tablet or a computer with a camera and a microphone can do a video visit. If patients don\u2019t have good internet access or a smart phone, they can do a phone visit instead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do I make an appointment with my primary care provider?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For a video visit with a primary care provider, if you are an existing patient, you can use online scheduling to make an appointment. Just log on to your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/access-my-health-connection\/\">My Health Connection<\/a> account. Then look in the upper right corner and find the button that says Schedule Video Visit. If you are a new patient, please call the primary care clinic where you wish to be seen and staff members will help you set up your first visit with a provider. Click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/?cityOrZip=80045&amp;locationType=All&amp;locationName=\">here<\/a> to find locations near you.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Gellert decided to do a video visit before going to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunnisonvalleyhealth.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gunnison hospital<\/a>. Susan downloaded the app and set up the online appointment. Dr. Elaine Reno, an emergency room physician with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-university-of-colorado-hospital-uch\/\">UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital<\/a>, appeared on Gellert\u2019s laptop and listened intently to the symptoms. Normally alert and energetic, Gellert was physically and mentally exhausted. She detailed the horror of the previous days: vomiting, constant nausea and severe abdominal pain. Reno instructed Gellert to go to the hospital in Gunnison, despite her misgivings, where doctors gave her fluids and medication to help with the nausea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut they would not admit me,\u201d said Gellert. \u201cThere just wasn\u2019t room for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Back home, the symptoms worsened. By Tuesday, Gellert was back in the emergency room. Again, she was sent home. Susan, her sister, called her friend, Dr. Jean Kutner, chief medical officer for the University of Colorado Hospital, and asked for advice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cABG needs to see a GI doctor (gastroenterologist), urgently,\u201d\u00a0 Kutner <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif\">said<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when Gellert scheduled another video visit with gastroenterologist Dr. Blair Fennimore, with University of Colorado Hospital.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Log in<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Video visits are exactly as the name implies. It\u2019s like Facetime or a Zoom meeting. The patient and the doctor are both on camera looking at one another through an iPad, computer or phone. Fennimore is a big fan of video visits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe appointments are on time, efficient and still allow for a personal connection between myself and the patient,\u201d said Fennimore. \u201cSeeing the patient allows me to get a sense of what\u2019s going on so I can decide how to best treat them or even admit them to the hospital if necessary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a big shift in medical care,\u201d Fennimore said. \u201cBut it\u2019s one that a lot of patients actually prefer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Gellert\u2019s case, Fennimore had reviewed her records before the visit began. A few clicks later, the two were connected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Fennimore could see me, look me in the eyes and ask me where it hurt,\u201d said Gellert.<\/p>\n<p>Fennimore recalls Gellert was in obvious pain and weak. He told her to get to Denver. She needed to be admitted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy system was falling apart,\u201d said Gellert. \u201cI hadn\u2019t eaten in almost 10 days and I still couldn\u2019t stop vomiting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeeing her convinced me that she needed an expedited workup to get on the right trajectory,\u201d said Fennimore, who took time to allay Gellert\u2019s fears about going to the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t stop medical care altogether and if you are sick enough to be in the hospital, then that\u2019s the right place for you to be, but we\u2019re going to make sure you are safe and we\u2019re not going to keep you here any longer than you need to be,\u201d Fennimore told Gellert.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Road to recovery<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>From her hospital bed at UCH, where she received treatment for severe ulcerative colitis,\u00a0Gellert had a crystal clear view of the mountains. Bright-eyed and sitting up for the first time in days, her phone rests on her lap where she can check My Health Connection app.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so helpful,\u201d said Gellert. \u201cI pull up test results and feel a lot more prepared when the doctors come in to talk to me or when they call me on my hospital room phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed. The old-school telephone, curly cord and all, is seeing a resurgence of sorts due to the COVID situation. Doctors and nurses now pick up a phone and call the patient\u2019s room to ask or answer questions. Gellert doesn\u2019t mind. She realizes it\u2019s a smart way to keep the spread of germs at bay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel really informed,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Gellert is back home.
