Photo by Getty Images.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From social distancing to wearing a mask in public places, this summer looks different for everyone, including kids.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/dana-m-fitzgerald-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Dana Fitzgerald<\/a>, a pediatrician in Steamboat Springs and a member of the medical staff at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-yampa-valley-medical-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center<\/a>, describes what you need to know about COVID-19 restrictions and how to keep your kids safe during this COVID-19 summer, below.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Protective measures and kid safety<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cOpening things up and letting kids hang out together is okay, but it\u2019s still important to take protective measures, \u201cFitzgerald said.<\/p>\n<p>There are five easy things that everyone can do to limit the spread of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/covid-19-coronavirus-recent-updates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COVID-19<\/a>: keep a distance of six feet from other people, wash your hands often, wear a face covering in public places and when you can\u2019t social distance, stay home if you\u2019re at sick or at risk, and get tested if you have symptoms of the virus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake sure kids understand that social distancing and handwashing are still really important,\u201d Fitzgerald said. \u201cAnd if they do go into buildings, make sure they\u2019ve got their masks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To visualize how far six feet is, kids can hold their arms out and check that they don\u2019t touch, or imagine there\u2019s a ski between them. Colorful masks can help make mask-wearing more palatable, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/why-soap-and-water-work-better-than-hand-sanitizer-to-remove-the-coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">washing hands<\/a> should be a constant habit.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also a good time to remind kids not to share their things, especially water bottles, and to always sneeze into their elbows, not their hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemind kids about these things daily,\u201d Fitzgerald said. \u201cIt\u2019s such a new thing for them to think about, it\u2019s important to get that reminder every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The emotional aspect of a COVID-19 summer<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Kids are adaptable, and most kids have taken recent changes in stride.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom an emotional standpoint, I feel most kids are doing okay now,\u201d Fitzgerald said. \u201cIt was really tough in quarantine \u2013 it was so different right away, and kids couldn\u2019t understand that everything changed on a dime. Now, most kids get that there\u2019s a virus and we don\u2019t want to get people sick, and so we have to do these things to protect ourselves and those around us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If your child is struggling with the recent changes, don\u2019t hesitate to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/tips-for-talking-to-children-about-the-coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">talk<\/a> with your health care provider about your concerns.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What can my kids do during the COVID-19 summer?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As restrictions begin to ease, kids are able to spend time with friends or a babysitter, and to attend camps, all still while taking the necessary precautions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCamps have been doing a really smart job of decreasing risk as best as possible, and balancing that with getting kids outside and socializing,\u201d Fitzgerald said.<\/p>\n<p>But just how many of the allowed activities parents choose to let their kids do is a personal decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of it comes down to a family\u2019s level of comfort,\u201d Fitzgerald said. \u201cIf a parent is undergoing chemotherapy or is immunocompromised, or if an elderly person is living in the house, they may want to be a bit more careful about where their kids are going.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Are my kids at risk for COVID-19?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThe latest studies suggest that for the vast majority of children, if they do get this, it\u2019s a mild disease,\u201d Fitzgerald said.<\/p>\n<p>Some children, including babies under one year old and children with underlying health issues, may be at higher risk.<\/p>\n<p>The severe inflammatory disease that affected some children first in New York remains very rare, but Fitzgerald points out that if infection levels increase, those cases could increase as well.<\/p>\n<p>Still, helping to reduce the spread of the virus is important.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeeping infection levels low is beneficial for everyone in the community,\u201d Fitzgerald said.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What if my child gets sick from the coronavirus?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Fitzgerald recommends that children who get sick and have symptoms of COVID-19 are tested for the virus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf your kid has a fever, make sure they get tested,\u201d Fitzgerald said. \u201cCatching a coronavirus infection quickly is really important for keeping everybody safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Your medical provider can help determine whether your child should be seen in the office and can help you navigate the testing process.<\/p>\n<p>While some of these measures can be difficult or feel strange, Fitzgerald encourages parents to remember that they help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese little things we do add up and make a difference,\u201d Fitzgerald said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>This article first appeared in the Steamboat Pilot &amp; Today.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From social distancing to wearing a mask in public places, this summer looks different for everyone, including kids.
