Photo courtesy of Merrill Rollhaus.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWhy not have a little fun with it,\u201d said Rollhaus, a freshman at Denison University outside Columbus, Ohio, where strict regulations have mostly kept the coronavirus at bay. From day one, the small, liberal arts college instituted random testing, temperature checks and serious consequences for offenders. So wearing a mask pretty much all the time doesn\u2019t faze Rollhaus. It\u2019s so commonplace, when she and her roommates watch a movie, maskless actors look out of place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are like, \u2018why aren\u2019t they wearing masks?\u2019\u201d said Rollhaus, a 2020 Colorado Academy graduate.<\/p>\n<p>Rollhaus is coming home for an extended holiday break that will last from Thanksgiving to well beyond New Year\u2019s. And like everything else in 2020, it won\u2019t be a simple homecoming. Her mom, Catherine, is setting up Merrill\u2019s room so when her daughter comes home, she can go right into quarantine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to be super careful,\u201d said Catherine.<\/p>\n<p>Denison is also providing students with a COVID-19 test that they can take when they arrive at home. Once Rollhaus arrives, she\u2019ll take the test, mail it off, and hope for a negative result. In the meantime, she\u2019ll hang out in her room or if the weather is nice, outside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will be hard but this is the way it is,\u201d said Catherine.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_35986\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35986\" style=\"width: 218px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-35986\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/11\/15141950\/Patel.Kartik-2.11.19-tiny-Copy.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"218\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/11\/15141950\/Patel.Kartik-2.11.19-tiny-Copy.webp 401w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/11\/15141950\/Patel.Kartik-2.11.19-tiny-Copy-218x300.webp 218w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/11\/15141950\/Patel.Kartik-2.11.19-tiny-Copy-109x150.webp 109w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/11\/15141950\/Patel.Kartik-2.11.19-tiny-Copy-200x275.webp 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 218px) 100vw, 218px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35986\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Kartik Patel.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She\u2019ll make quarantine less painful in creative ways \u2013 notes, treats and flowers outside her door.<\/p>\n<p>Despite steps like these, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/kartik-k-patel-md\/\">Dr. Kartik Patel<\/a>, an internal medicine physician with UCHealth, warns parents not to rely exclusively on the take-home tests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNone of the tests are 100%,\u201d said Patel. \u201cThere are a lot of false-negative and positive results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he recommends kids quarantine and monitor for any COVID-19 symptoms for two weeks. As for spending time with old high school pals, Patel once again urges caution. Many are returning from states where mask, social distance and other preventative policies are lax.<div class=\"su-callout-box col-xs-12 col-sm-6 right\" style=\"background-color:#dce4e7; color:#2e3b44;\">\n<p><strong>Other tips:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Get a flu shot.<\/li>\n<li>Minimize interactions while traveling.<\/li>\n<li>Consider driving, rather than flying.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid restaurants and bars.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t share food or drinks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cTake advantage of technology,\u201d said Patel. \u201cIf you just have to see someone, stay outside, mask up and stay socially distant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/larissa-pisney-md-infectious-disease\/\">Dr. Larissa Pisney<\/a>, medical director, infection prevention and control for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-university-of-colorado-hospital-uch\/\">UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital<\/a> and UCHealth Metro Denver, works in the COVID-19 units regularly. Despite some advances in how providers treat the virus, it\u2019s a devastating illness. No one should try and game the system by testing out of quarantine. Some universities are even offering to house students over the holidays rather than contributing to a surge in cases by turning them loose. Photo courtesy of Merrill Rollhaus.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Going off to college is challenging for vulnerable young adults under normal circumstances &#8211; homesickness, roommate challenges, and academic expectations to name a few. The pandemic, hours of exhausting online classes and isolation, not to mention the loss of what\u2019s typically a social experience, has tested the mental health of many. Parents and adults should to keep a watchful eye for signs of stress, anxiety and depression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCheck in with your kid regularly, turn off screens and focus on meaningful connections,\u201d said Pisney.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPointedly asking about depression is ok and if there\u2019s any hesitation or concern, get professional help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Catherine is thrilled her daughter is coming home, and thankful she\u2019s had a relatively normal college experience with some in-person classes, an opportunity to play lacrosse and make new friends. A bonus is very few COVID cases on campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only way to be successful is to follow the rules,\u201d said Catherine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish things were different,\u201d said Merrill. \u201cBut I\u2019ll make the best of it.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Before Merrill Rollhaus heads to class or to lacrosse practice, she grabs a mask from the colorful stash hanging on the wall right next to her dorm room door.
