I don\u2019t even know,\u2019\u201d said Tracy Denney, an occupational therapist with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-sportsmed-clinic-steamboat-springs\/\">UCHealth SportsMed Clinic in Steamboat Springs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Denney outlines why this is happening\u00a0and how to help.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why brain fog: the overloaded and passive brain<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Shifts that have resulted from the pandemic have affected people in markedly different ways.<\/p>\n<p><strong><div class=\"su-callout-box col-xs-12 col-sm-6 right\" style=\"background-color:#dce4e7; color:#2e3b44;\"><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wpgb-block-3 wpgb-idle-scheme-1\">CREATIVITY: THINKING OUTSIDE (AND ALL AROUND) THE BOX<\/h3>\n<p>The Denver Center for the Performing Arts and UCHealth are offering Zoom classes designed to improve health and well-being.<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-column su-column-size-2-3\">\n<div>Activate your creativity! Igniting curiosity with creativity is the heartbeat of engagement with the world. Whether that world is your world of work or play, this online master class &#8211; facilitated by a duo of theatre-makers \u2013 will incorporate kinesthetic and tactile experiences designed to inspire creative thinking and energize your creative power.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Here&#8217;s how to sign up for the Feb. 25, 2021 Zoom class:<\/div>\n<div class=\"su-column su-column-size-2-3\">\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Go to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denvercenter.org\/\">DCPA\u2019s website<\/a> and click on the education tab<\/li>\n<li>Zoom classes are listed under \u201cAdult Online Classes\u201d linked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denvercenter.org\/education\/adult-acting-classes\/\">here<\/a> and people can click the \u201cregister\u201d button to sign-up for upcoming classes<\/li>\n<li>Class schedules and descriptions are listed below and can be sorted by type, day of the week and type of session.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2><strong><\/div><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Working parents with kids at home may feel like they\u2019re always \u2018on,\u2019 thinking about whether their kids are doing their schoolwork \u2013 or even still in the house \u2013 while they try to complete the next Zoom call or power through a report. That constant stress, with your brain bouncing from one thing to the next, can make it difficult to focus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we\u2019re seeing is people can\u2019t shut their brains off,\u201d Denney said. \u201cThey\u2019re worried about COVID, worried about family, wondering if they\u2019re working enough, are their kids learning. They\u2019ve been going nonstop for so long that they\u2019re not sleeping. It\u2019s exhausting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, people who live alone and are either retired or working from home may find that loss of regular routines, such as meeting friends for lunch or a walk, has resulted in a lack of motivation and fuzzy thinking. Denney has seen a number of patients whose shift in mental clarity through the pandemic has made them worry they\u2019re in the early stages of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/alzheimers-dementia\/about\/?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/aging\/dementia\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dementia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe brain turns passive,\u201d Denney said. \u201cIf you\u2019re not actively using your brain \u2013 not going for walks and getting out, socializing, making food \u2013 your brain may just be \u2018chilling.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Reducing brain fog: The need for a new routine<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Establishing a new routine can help foster mental clarity and reduce\u00a0dreaded brain fog.<\/p>\n<p>Start by getting dressed each day, even if you aren\u2019t going anywhere. If you\u2019re overwhelmed, try a \u201cbrain dump\u201d each morning in which you list out the top things you have to do for the day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust getting that out of your brain helps,\u201d Denney said. \u201cSo many people are running around with so many things to do when they\u2019re home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re working from home, dim the lights and use essential oils after you finish work to help signal to your brain that work is over.<\/p>\n<p>And if you find you\u2019re underwhelmed by the days\u2019 tasks, keep your brain active by doing crossword puzzles or Sudoku, or carve out time to learn a new hobby, such as painting or baking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLearning a new skill is a great tool to get your brain back into that active state,\u201d Denney said.<\/p>\n<p>Make sleep a priority and don\u2019t forget to exercise. Besides releasing feel-good endorphins, it gives inputs to your vestibular system, which controls your balance, and your proprioception system, which resides in your muscles and joints and gives a sense of body position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that when we leave the gym and go to work, we feel better,\u201d Denney said. \u201cGoing for a walk or run, or even using a weighted blanket, puts pressure on our joints and can add clarity to what we\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An occupational therapist can help through this process, as they help people increase participation and performance in their daily routines.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>When it&#8217;s not brain fog: recognize red flags<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A loss of motivation for daily activities such as bathing, eating and getting dressed are reason to get help. Occupational therapy may be all that\u2019s needed to help you establish new routines, but in some cases, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/about\/community-benefit-report\/behavioral-health\/\">mental health<\/a> counseling and medication may be necessary.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Clearing the fog: Know it will get better<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While every patient is different, establishing a new routine can do wonders for your mental clarity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPatients always ask, \u2018Will it get better?\u2019\u201d Denney said. \u201cWhile each patient is different, the research is there that with developing a new routine, mental fog is going to improve if you stick to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>This article first appeared in the Steamboat Pilot &amp; Today.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Months of an upside-down routine \u2013 or in some cases, lack of a routine altogether \u2013 have left our brains in the lurch.
