Never hesitate to seek help.<\/p>\n<p>Every 40 seconds, someone has a <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/heart-disease\/data-research\/facts-stats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heart attack<\/a> or stroke, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n<p>If you think you could be having a heart attack or a stroke, it\u2019s an emergency situation.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a small window of time to receive the most effective treatments and to improve your chances of a full recovery, so don\u2019t second guess symptoms and don\u2019t wait to get care.<\/p>\n<p>Heart attacks and strokes are currently the top two leading causes of death globally, according to the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/the-top-10-causes-of-death\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Health Organization<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is, with quick intervention, most people will recover.<br \/>\n<div class=\"su-pullquote su-pullquote-align-right\"><strong>Nine million neurons die every 60 seconds a stroke goes untreated.<\/strong> <em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">\u2013 Journal of Stroke.<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/symptoms-medical-emergencies-never-to-ignore-even-during-a-pandemic\/\">During the pandemic<\/a>, some people have hesitated to seek care. As a result, lives have been lost.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, it\u2019s more important than ever to know the signs and symptoms of an emergency and to act fast to get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/services\/emergency-care\/\">emergency care<\/a> if you think you need it.<\/p>\n<p>While heart attacks and strokes are very different, there are some key similarities.<\/p>\n<p>Both result from the lack of blood flow to important parts of the body. In a heart attack, a blockage affects blood flow to the heart, while in a stroke a blockage affects blood flow to the brain. Both also occur suddenly and require immediate medical attention. Source: Getty Images.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>What are the common symptoms of a stroke?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Common Stroke Symptoms:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Drooping or weakness; one side of the face, leg or arm may droop, be weak, or even numb.<div class=\"su-pullquote su-pullquote-align-right\"><strong>After the first symptoms of a stroke, medical care must begin within 3 hours for the best odds of full recovery. Do not wait to seek help!<\/strong> <span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">\u2013 <em>Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/em><\/span><\/div><\/li>\n<li>Difficulty speaking; speech may be slurred, or it may be hard to understand what others are saying.<\/li>\n<li>Vision loss; things may look dim, or there is loss of vision in one or both eyes.<\/li>\n<li>Movement issues; it\u2019s common to feel dizzy or experience problems with balance, coordination, moving or walking.<\/li>\n<li>Remember the acronym F.A.S.T. from the National Stroke Association and the American Heart Association. \u201cF\u201d stands for facial drooping. \u201cA\u201d stands for arm weakness. \u201cS\u201d stands for speech difficulties and \u201cT\u201d stands for time. Uncomfortable pressure, fullness, squeezing or pain in the center of the chest that last more than a few minutes, or comes and goes.<\/li>\n<li>Other body discomfort. Feeling discomfort or pain in the shoulders, neck, arms or jaw.<\/li>\n<li>Chest pain that doesn\u2019t improve; Rest or taking nitroglycerin doesn\u2019t help.<\/li>\n<li>Chest pain with other symptoms, including:\n<ul>\n<li>Sweating<div class=\"su-pullquote su-pullquote-align-right\"><strong>Permanent damage can occur just 30 minutes after heart blockage.<\/strong> <span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><em>\u2013 American Heart Association.<\/em><\/span><\/div><\/li>\n<li>Cool, clammy skin or paleness<\/li>\n<li>Shortness of breath<\/li>\n<li>Nausea or vomiting<\/li>\n<li>Dizziness or fainting<\/li>\n<li>Unexplained weakness or fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Fast or irregular pulse<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Learn how UCHealth\u2019s response times are consistently faster than national averages for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/treatments-procedures\/heart-attack-care\/\">heart attacks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Difficulty breathing<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re short of breath, drawing a breath without getting any benefit from the air, or having trouble breathing, seek medical attention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it\u2019s hard to breathe, that needs attention,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/nathan-anderson-md\/\">Dr. Nathan Anderson<\/a>, an emergency medicine physician at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-yampa-valley-medical-center\/\">UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center<\/a>, Anderson. \u201cNothing is so elemental to life and imminently threatening as the inability to breathe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Issues such as asthma, pulmonary embolism, pneumonia and chronic lung disease may be to blame. Since shortness of breath is a symptom of COVID-19, be honest with the 911 dispatcher and let him or her know that you may have the virus so that emergency responders can protect themselves.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Trauma, burns and head pain<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If you experience serious trauma, such as a bad fall \u2013 especially one in which you hurt your head or spine \u2013 seek medical attention immediately. Similarly, get help for serious burns, or burns that are deep, large, turn the skin dry and leathery, look charred, or have portions that are white, brown or black.<\/p>\n<p>And never ignore a serious, sudden headache, especially when it presents with fever, confusion, faintness or loss of consciousness. A headache of that intensity could signal a serious issue, such as a stroke or very high blood pressure.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Abdominal pain<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Unusual pain in the abdominal area, or anywhere below the ribs and above the hips, can be cause for seeking emergency medical help, especially if the pain is new, severe, or accompanied by nausea, vomiting and fever.<\/p>\n<p>There are various causes of abdominal pain, including appendicitis, kidney stones, a tumor, diverticulitis and complications of undiagnosed pregnancies.<\/p>\n<p>Remember: in many cases, seconds count. And even with the threat of COVID-19, it\u2019s important to address serious medical conditions. Don\u2019t hesitate to call 911 and go to the emergency department when it\u2019s necessary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore and more injury can be occurring as time is passing,\u201d Anderson said. \u201cIt\u2019s better to overreact and over respond and be reassured, then to underreact and under-respond and miss the chance to intervene meaningfully.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Never ignore an emergency.
