Photos by Cyrus McCrimmon for UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>By Katie Kerwin McCrimmon and Erin Emery<\/p>\n<p>Parents were overjoyed to bring their children for walk-in, after-school COVID-19 vaccines on the first day children and teens, ages 12 to 15, were eligible to receive inoculations that could bring back simple pleasures, like sleepovers.<\/p>\n<p>The mood \u2014\u00a0and the shoes \u2014 shifted noticeably as children arrived at vaccine clinics around Colorado on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Kids wore colorful Chuck Taylors and Vans with checkerboard patterns. They couldn\u2019t wait to be fully vaccinated so they could enjoy hanging out with friends in person again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really haven\u2019t seen my friends since COVID started. I can actually have sleepovers now,\u201d said Charlie Bandimere, 12.<\/p>\n<p>He was nonchalant after getting his jab.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt didn\u2019t really hurt. We haven\u2019t had any sleepovers,\u201d said Charlie.<\/p>\n<p>He lives in Thornton, and his dad spontaneously brought him to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-university-of-colorado-hospital-uch\/\">UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora<\/a> on Thursday afternoon after learning online 90 minutes earlier that children and teens are welcome to show up without appointments at UCHealth clinics to get their free vaccines. (Click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/services\/infectious-diseases\/coronavirus-covid-19\/covid-19-vaccine\/#vaccineclinics\">here<\/a> for locations and clinic hours.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got family members who are high risk \u2014\u00a0grandparents in their 80s with health conditions. We\u2019ve been protecting them,\u201d said Charlie\u2019s dad, Brian Bandimere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just walked right in. It was great,\u201d Brian said.<\/p>\n<p>Once Charlie is fully vaccinated \u2014 two weeks after his second dose \u2014 he wants to go to Elitch\u2019s and Water World with his friends. The family is also looking forward to vacations at Lake McConaughy and Lake Powell where they\u2019ll enjoy tubing, fishing and playing on jet skis. Now kids and teens ages 12 and older can easily get COVID-19 vaccines for free at walk-in clinics.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Now, after getting her first dose, she can envision some freedom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to hang out with my friends,\u201d Rosalyn said.<\/p>\n<p>She also wants to visit her sister in Oregon and go to a movie in a theater.<\/p>\n<p>Her dad, Darrold Parker, is a cancer survivor who was at high risk for get critically ill if he got COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was given 3-to-6 months to live back in July of 2007,\u201d Darrold said.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, he got a second opinion for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/landing\/north\/cancer-neuroendocrine\/?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_term=%2Bneuroendocrine%2Bcarcinoid%2Bcancer&amp;utm_campaign=UCHealth%7CFY20%7CCancer-Care%7CSystem%7CNorth%7C%7C%7CSearch%7CGoogle%7C%7C%7C%7CNeuroendocrine%7CReporting-Cancer\/&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwv_iEBhASEiwARoemvF5KKppdGPj495jEJkjizlMHMuf8tincI0VdXJU-LTRexjpIsFgt2hoCcf8QAvD_BwE\">neuroendocrine carcinoma<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-university-of-colorado-cancer-center-anschutz\/\">University of Colorado Cancer Center<\/a> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-at-university-of-colorado-anschutz-medical-campus\/\">Anschutz Medical Campus<\/a>. He got a new lease on life thanks to the care he has received for years there.<\/p>\n<p>But the pandemic has been tough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really feel sorry for Rosalyn. She likes going out with friends. She\u2019s been really good about curtailing all of her activities for a year-and-a-half for our safety,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>School pals make a long drive, then pose with new vaccine cards<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>School pals Tarek Murad and Miles Elkins, both 12, carpooled with their mothers from Pueblo on Thursday to get their first dose of vaccine at the UCHealth Memorial Administrative Center in Colorado Springs.<\/p>\n<p>Tarek\u2019s mom, Barbara Murad, said she didn\u2019t hesitate about making the long drive. Her husband, a physician in Pueblo, called her from work on Thursday morning and encouraged her to hunt for clinics vaccinating kids ages 12 and older. Photo by Cary Vogrin for UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe felt it was extremely important to get the vaccine for both personal and community reasons,\u201d she said, adding that her family has seen friends struggle with COVID-19 and its after-effects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a lot of faith in this vaccine and are eager to safely resume family visits, gatherings and travel.\u00a0Tarek asked to get this as soon as he was able, and luckily UCHealth was open and the experience was so easy and the staff was amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miles\u2019 mother, April Elkins, also is a believer in the vaccine \u2013 so much so that she was a participant in UCHealth\u2019s vaccine trial for AstraZeneca.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to get the vaccine because Miles has asthma and when he was younger, he\u00a0was in the hospital at least five different times with various\u00a0respiratory viruses,\u201d Elkins said. \u00a0\u201cI was thrilled to have a chance\u00a0to better protect him and those around him from this virus. \u00a0I\u2019m also excited about the possibility of having\u00a0a somewhat \u2018normal\u2019 summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miles, who celebrated his 12<sup>th<\/sup> birthday just last week, was a little hesitant about the needle stick, but it was over before he knew it. He received his vaccine just seconds after his friend, and both then posed for a photo with their vaccination cards.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Baseball player gets vaccine in his throwing arm<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Carson Baker, 13, is a man of few words. He\u2019s also a first baseman and an occasional pitcher for his team at Jenkins Middle School in Colorado Springs.<\/p>\n<p>When Allen Reid, a medical assistant at a vaccine clinic at the Memorial Administrative Center, asked Carson if he wanted to receive the COVID-19 vaccine in his throwing arm, his reply was succinct.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYep.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Asked why he believes in the vaccine, again, his words are few, but powerful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just a good thing to do so I don\u2019t get COVID,\u2019\u2019 Carson said.<\/p>\n<p>His mother, Susan Baker, is a health care professional at UCHealth who encourages adults and children ages 12 and older to get their vaccines so families and communities can get back to normal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s already been quarantined three times from school \u2026 so in order to get on with our lives from day to day, I think this is really important,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Ready to take a plane ride more safely<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Tammy Miller brought her daughter, Aaliyah Bigbee, 14, to receive her first shot. Aaliyah is in the eighth grade at Russel Middle School in Colorado Springs.<\/p>\n<p>Tammy wanted her daughter to get vaccinated because the family is boarding an airplane next month and flying to Charleston, South Carolina. They\u2019re planning to spend a few days on Folly Beach.<\/p>\n<p>Though vaccinations are not required to board commercial airliners, Tammy wanted an extra bit of protection for her daughter and herself. In February, the whole family got COVID-19 and suffered for a week.<\/p>\n<p>Aaliyah planned to tell her friends about getting the shot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel good. I feel much better that I have it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Tammy said that she knows of two people who died from the virus and another man who was hospitalized.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey actually made him write a will because he was so sick. That\u2019s so scary. He can&#8217;t wait to get his vaccine as soon as younger kids can get vaccines to prevent COVID-19.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meghan Williams, 13, has a fear of needles, which is quite common among kids and adults alike. For comfort, she brought the trusted blankie she\u2019s had since she was a baby. Her family is from Maryland, so her blankie has a crab and other sea creatures to remind her of the beautiful Maryland shore. The blankie also has some well-worn holes from all the comfort it has provided over the years. It came in handy on Thursday too.<\/p>\n<p>Meghan buried her head in her blankie as she got her shot. Her younger brother, Wilson, 10, also held her hand and hugged her. He\u2019s not eligible for a vaccine yet, but joined Meghan and their sister, Kate, 12, as both got their vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>Their mom, Kimberly Williams, is a nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit or NICU at University of Colorado Hospital. She was thrilled when she got word that the vaccine clinic had opened to children and younger teens.<\/p>\n<p>Both Kate and Wilson were preemies themselves. They are doing great now, but had rough starts in life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was born at 26 weeks and spent three months here,\u201d Kimberly said of Wilson.<\/p>\n<p>Kate was born at 32 weeks and was able to go home about a month after her birth.<\/p>\n<p>The Williams family has been very careful throughout the pandemic and can\u2019t wait for the freedom that vaccines for almost all family members will provide.<\/p>\n<p>Meghan\u2019s nervousness melted away as soon as she got her first dose of the Pfizer vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just glad that I could be one of the first ones my age to help with this whole pandemic. Like other kids her age, she\u2019s looking forward to sleepovers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe like to stay up late and gossip and talk,\u201d Kate said.<\/p>\n<p>Her advice to other kids: \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid. If you are afraid, you\u2019ll be fine. I got it and I feel fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The family is looking forward to taking an RV trip across the country this summer. They\u2019ll travel all the way to Maryland where they will visit relatives and enjoy fun times and delicious seafood on the shore.<\/p>\n<p>And even though Wilson can&#8217;t get his vaccine yet, he\u2019s hoping he\u2019ll be able to get it later this summer. She attended Colorado College thanks to a merit scholarship from the Boettcher Foundation and worked as a park ranger in Rocky Mountain National Park during summers in college. Katie is a dedicated storyteller who loves getting to know UCHealth patients and providers and sharing their inspiring stories. Katie spent years working as an award-winning journalist at the Rocky Mountain News and at an online health policy news site before joining UCHealth in 2017.
