Some of these narrow-gauge tracks still transport passengers today.<\/p>\n<p>By 1880, railroad construction in Colorado was booming. The ability to transport goods and people caused Colorado&#8217;s population to more than double over the next decade.<\/p>\n<p>Railways still transport many of Colorado\u2019s goods, but for Coloradans and their visitors, scenic train rides on Amtrak routes and historic railways provide a unique view of the state\u2019s amazing landscape and a glimpse into its history that no other mode of transportation offers.<\/p>\n<p>But remember, Colorado&#8217;s everchanging weather can cause train delays and cancellations so make sure you check with current track conditions and train schedule updates before heading out for your adventure.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Scenic train rides in Colorado<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Leadville, Colorado &amp; Southern Railroad<\/strong><strong> \u2013 Leadville, Colorado<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Leadville is the highest incorporated city in North America and has a rich history of mining.<\/p>\n<p>The Leadville, Colorado &amp; Southern Railroad provides great views of the Arkansas River Valley. By rising 1,000 feet off the valley floor, passengers have views of Fremont Pass and the two tallest peaks in Colorado, Mt. Massive and Mt. Visit November through January to hop aboard the \u201cHoliday Express\u201d for a magical trip through the snowy mountains on a light-decorated train.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leadvillerailroad.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The station<\/a> is open year around, but the warmest months are July and August. Be prepared for possible snow as early as September and as late as June. Most roundtrips are 2.5 hours.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Georgetown Loop<\/strong><strong> Railroad \u2013 Georgetown, Colorado<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Georgetown Loop Railroad has two &#8220;iron horse&#8221; steam engines, which were preserved and now operate on the track between Georgetown and Silver Plume.<\/p>\n<p>The 1923 Engine 9 is a three-truck Shay-type locomotive and one of the three largest narrow gauge Shays ever built. It arrived in Colorado in 2011 and underwent 15 months of work to make it operational for the loop.<\/p>\n<p>Steam engine No.111 was built in 1926. Hikers and backpackers can take the Silverton Diesel Train to access trailheads of stunning trails and some of Colorado\u2019s famous 14,000-foot peaks in this area.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway <\/strong><strong>\u2013 Manitou Springs, Colorado<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In April 2021, the new Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway experience officially opened in Manitou Springs. You can enjoy <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cograilway.com\/the-new-experience\/maps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a roundtrip ride on the Cog<\/a> or take it one-way if you decide to hike the 13-mile Barr Trail up or down Pikes Peak. The history of the r<a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.royalgorgeroute.com\/about-us\/royal-gorge-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ailroad that runs through it<\/a> is one of conflict and war between the Santa Fe and the D&amp;RG railroad companies, which started in the late 1800s when silver was discovered in Colorado. Along with enjoying the rich history of the area, train passengers get up-close looks at this Colorado canyon. It is owned jointly by both states and was awarded the National Historic Landmark Designation in 2012.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/cumbrestoltec.com\/about-us-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The railroad<\/a> was constructed in 1880 as part of the Rio Grande\u2019s narrow gauge San Juan Extension, which served the silver mining in the area. After the Rio Grande abandoned the track post-World War II, the states jointly purchased the rail lines for preservation purposes in 1970 and started hauling tourists the next year.<\/p>\n<p>With a top speed of just 12 miles per hour, this train ride provides a relaxing way to enjoy beautiful landscapes. Bonus: A hot meal is included in your ticket price.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Cripple Creek &amp; Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad<\/strong><strong> \u2013 Cripple Creek, Colorado<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/cripplecreekrailroad.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">This railroad<\/a> once carried miners when the valley was home to about 50,000 residents. Now, this historic steam engine \u2014 with its pillaring smoke, sounds of steam and working steel \u2014 transports visitors back to the gold mining days of Cripple Creek and Victor. Photo courtesy of Amtrak.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The route takes you out of Denver&#8217;s recently remodeled Union Station, climbs up the foothills and through several mountain tunnels before a stop at Winter Park. From there, you head into Gore Canyon and follow the Colorado River for several hours. This stretch is a popular day and overnight rafting trip for locals. Along with wildlife and great views, you may also get to experience an &#8220;unofficial tradition&#8221; of boaters mooning the train riders.<\/p>\n<p>The train stops in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/colorado-hot-springs-soak-relax-recharge-even-during-the-pandemic\/\">historic Glenwood Springs<\/a>, then heads to Grand Junction before continuing west to Salt Lake City, Utah.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that the Zephyr may run late, though part of the fun of train travel is that it\u2019s relaxing.
