But Broerman, a 36-year nurse and mother of four, could see the emotional toll Schultze faced as he thought of not receiving his high school diploma alongside Woodland Park High School classmates.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_40869\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40869\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-40869\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/08\/04093139\/Vickie-Broerman.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/08\/04093139\/Vickie-Broerman.webp 667w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/08\/04093139\/Vickie-Broerman-200x300.webp 200w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/08\/04093139\/Vickie-Broerman-100x150.webp 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-40869\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vickie Broerman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI thought if my child was in the hospital, I\u2019d want someone to step up for them,\u201d Broerman said. \u201cThat was my motivation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Broerman organized an impromptu graduation ceremony for Schultze, complete with \u201cPomp and Circumstance,\u201d decorations and 112 staff members who applauded as Schultze rose from his wheelchair. He walked the final few steps to receive his diploma from school principal Kevin Burr and counselor Chad Cosner.<\/p>\n<p>There wasn\u2019t a dry eye in the house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I walked into Party America in my scrubs and practically cleaned out the place, I think they thought I was a little crazy,\u201d Broerman said. \u201cBut it takes a lot to make a hospital hallway festive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>High school wasn\u2019t easy for Schultze. Only a few days before his accident, he\u2019d gotten news that he\u2019d completed all requirements and proudly showed off his cap and gown to family members, beaming at the thought of wearing his school\u2019s green-and-white colors and crossing a stage. A celebratory ATV ride nearly ended the dream. After the crash, Schultze was airlifted to Memorial Central where surgeons used screws and rods to mend his fractured vertebrae. They also wired his broken jaw shut.<\/p>\n<p>Despite his injuries, Schultze gave a <a href=\"https:\/\/gazette.com\/pikespeakcourier\/hospital-hallway-becomes-graduation-central-for-injured-woodland-park-high-school-senior\/article_f7406b0c-bfd0-11eb-aa03-4f4d67744109.html\">brief interview to a reporter<\/a>. He also thanked Broerman who\u2019d listened to him and offered personal advice, including \u201cYour past can propel you or paralyze you \u2013 the choice is yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Broerman praised dozens of departments and individuals who helped with the celebration in addition to leading Schultze\u2019s care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDietary, housekeeping, nurses, trauma surgeons and leadership came together,\u201d Broerman said. \u201cWe all got behind this kid.
