Source: Getty Images.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The winter months can be hard on our bodies.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you click into skis, buckle on a snowboard, ride a bike with fat tires, lace up ice skates or strap on snowshoes, health experts encourage you to follow these winter health tips so you can do your part to keep yourself and others as safe as possible. Those venturing outdoors need to protect their heads, skin and eyes. Plus, it&#8217;s vital to stay warm and safe during the winter.<\/p>\n<h2>The top winter health tips to protect yourself<\/h2>\n<h2>Protect your head<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cSnow is soft, but it can also be as hard as concrete,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/laura-sehnert-md\/\">Dr. Laura Sehnert<\/a>, an emergency medicine physician and chief medical officer at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-yampa-valley-medical-center\/\">UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center<\/a>. \u201cA helmet can save you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/diseases-conditions\/concussion-management\/\">Concussions<\/a> and other head injuries are most common when skiing at high speeds or in the trees. If you do have a significant crash with a helmet, invest in a new one as the foam in the helmet may have become compressed and may not fully protect your head.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/sports-related-concussion-awareness-and-protocols-transformed\/\">sports concussions and protocols<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Protect your eyes<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cInjuries to the eye can be prevented simply by protecting your eyes,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/nathan-hamburger-md\/\">Dr. Nathan Hamburger<\/a>, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/services\/eye-care\/neuro-ophthalmology\/\">ophthalmologist<\/a> in Steamboat Springs and a member of the medical staff at UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of your outdoor winter activity, wear goggles or sunglasses to protect your eyes from snow blindness, dry eyes and eye trauma.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Learn more about <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/protect-your-eyes-all-winter-long\/\">protecting your eyes all winter long<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Protect your skin<\/h2>\n<p>Select a broad-spectrum sunscreen for protection against both <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/radiation-emitting-products\/tanning\/ultraviolet-uv-radiation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UVA and UVB rays<\/a>, as both may contribute to skin cancer. Snow and ice are reflective, which means the sun can hit you from above and below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/sunscreen-101-how-to-protect-skin-from-skin-cancer-and-premature-aging\/\"> &#8220;Sunscreen 101&#8221;<\/a> to better protect your skin from cancer and premature aging.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Protect your extremities<\/h2>\n<p>Dress appropriately to help ward off the potential of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/diseases-conditions\/frostbite\/\">frostbite<\/a>. Clothes that are too tight, permeable to wind or that don\u2019t breathe or wick away moisture can quickly cause issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf clothes don\u2019t wick, get wet and stay wet, it can really predispose you to frostbite,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/david-cionni-md\/\">Dr. David Cionni<\/a>, an emergency medicine physician at UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center.<\/p>\n<p>Pay special attention to the hands, feet, fingers, toes, ears, cheeks and nose, as they are at the end of the blood flow.<\/p>\n<h2>Protect your body (by developing your core)<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cA stable core helps reduce your potential for injury and optimize performance,\u201d said Dave Grinnell, a physical therapist and board-certified clinical specialist in orthopedics at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-sportsmed-clinic-steamboat-springs\/\">UCHealth SportsMed Clinic<\/a> in Steamboat Springs.<\/p>\n<p>Fundamentally, a stable core protects the spinal cord, which is the main information highway by which the brain communicates with the rest of the body. With a stable core, you can do most activities, including skiing and snowboarding, more efficiently.<\/p>\n<p>Grinnell recommends a number of exercises to strengthen the core \u2013 planks, pushups, Pilates, yoga, and dynamic stretches such as cat and camel. One of the easiest things you can do to stay healthy? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/treatments-procedures\/immunizations-and-vaccines\/\">Get vaccinated<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou may be the one getting vaccinated, but everyone around you benefits,\u201d said Lauren Bryan, infection preventionist at UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center. \u201cFlu shots take two weeks to fully kick in and for your body to start building immunity. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/services\/infectious-diseases\/coronavirus-covid-19\/covid-19-vaccine\/\">COVID-19 vaccinations<\/a> take 14 days after the vaccine series is completed to be fully effective.
