{"id":4606,"date":"2016-09-28T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-09-28T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/2016\/09\/28\/top-6-things-women-in-their-20s-should-consider\/"},"modified":"2023-07-03T13:55:05","modified_gmt":"2023-07-03T19:55:05","slug":"top-6-things-women-in-their-20s-should-consider","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/top-6-things-women-in-their-20s-should-consider\/","title":{"rendered":"Top 6 things women in their 20s should consider"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Many women wait until they get pregnant for the first time or start having health issues before seeing a doctor on a regular basis.<\/p>\n<p>That can be a mistake, said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/mitra-razzaghi-md-internal-medicine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Mitra Razzaghi<\/a>, the Medical Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-women-s-integrated-services-in-health-wish-anschutz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Women\u2019s Integrated Services in Health<\/a> practice, a practice that provides comprehensive primary and outpatient gynecology care to women at the University of Colorado Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Razzaghi said regular health care should start much earlier and there are several important things women in their 20s should do to ensure their current and future health.<\/p>\n<p>Here are her top six things women in their 20s should consider:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8898 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/01\/28140526\/Running-Photoshop.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"122\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/01\/28140526\/Running-Photoshop.webp 1200w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/01\/28140526\/Running-Photoshop-300x122.webp 300w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/01\/28140526\/Running-Photoshop-1024x416.webp 1024w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/01\/28140526\/Running-Photoshop-768x312.webp 768w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/01\/28140526\/Running-Photoshop-150x61.webp 150w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/01\/28140526\/Running-Photoshop-200x81.webp 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Develop good habits<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cIt is important to develop good habits to stay physically and emotionally healthy,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>These habits include, but are not limited to: getting adequate and regular sleep; having a balanced colorful diet to include plenty of fruits and vegetables; avoidance of excessive fast or processed foods: avoidance of sugary drinks as much as possible; and consuming only moderate amounts of alcohol.<\/p>\n<p>She also recommends regular exercise or physical activity for a minimum of 30-60 minutes five days a week. And that\u2019s really a minimum. More is better, in this case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd absolutely avoid smoking, which can lead to many illnesses,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo many illnesses and disorders have been attributed to smoking as the cause. In addition to lung-related diseases such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/diseases-conditions\/copd-chronic-obstructive-pulmonary-disease\/\">COPD<\/a>, asthma and lung cancer, smoking can cause or worsen diabetes, heart attacks and strokes. It can accelerate blindness, macular degeneration and cataracts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn women specifically, smoking can increase the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/diseases-conditions\/ectopic-pregnancy\/\">ectopic pregnancies<\/a> and preterm labor or low-birth-weight babies.\u00a0 Many types of cancer are connected to smoking.\u00a0 These include, but are not limited to cancer of cervix, stomach, colon and pancreas.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Follow a healthy sexual lifestyle<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cIf you are sexually active, always consider safe sexual practices with the use of condoms in addition to another reliable form of contraception,\u201d she said.\u00a0 She recommends seeing a doctor at least once a year for a check-up that includes a discussion of the patient\u2019s sexual health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you have not received an HPV vaccination, you have till age 26 to get up to date,\u201d she said. The HPV vaccine can help prevent cervical cancer in the future.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3194 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/1970\/01\/28144619\/EXT_Vegetables_iStock_000017009091Medium.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/1970\/01\/28144619\/EXT_Vegetables_iStock_000017009091Medium.webp 600w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/1970\/01\/28144619\/EXT_Vegetables_iStock_000017009091Medium-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/1970\/01\/28144619\/EXT_Vegetables_iStock_000017009091Medium-150x100.webp 150w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/1970\/01\/28144619\/EXT_Vegetables_iStock_000017009091Medium-200x133.webp 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you are planning a pregnancy, don\u2019t forget prenatal vitamins\u201d from the beginning, she added.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Use sun protection<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Protect your skin and your eyes from the damaging effects of sun exposure, she advised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlways wear a minimum SPF 20 sunscreen when outdoors, and don\u2019t forget to reapply as directed,\u201d she said.\u00a0 \u201cAlso protect your eyes from damaging UV light by wearing sunglasses with UV protection,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbsolutely avoid tanning beds, a major cause of melanoma in youth,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Boost bone health<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cMake sure you get adequate calcium in your diet,\u201d she said. \u201cWomen continue to build their bones up to their mid-20s.\u00a0 Starting off with good strong bones early on can prevent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/diseases-conditions\/osteoporosis\/\">osteoporosis<\/a> later in life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Young women need about 1000 mg calcium and a minimum of 600 IU of vitamin D per day, she advised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best and most bioavailable source of calcium is food, specifically dairy products. Each serving of dairy roughly has 300 mg of calcium. Lactose-free dairy products have similar amounts of calcium. \u00a0If one is unable to get enough calcium through diet, then supplementation with calcium may be needed among which calcium citrate would be the best-absorbed type.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also important to perform weight-bearing exercises at least 30 minutes per day, 5 days a week, she said.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Avoid injuries<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It seems like an obvious thing, but lots of injuries are avoidable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAvoid driving under the influence, or with distractions such as texting while driving,\u201d she suggested. \u201cAlways wear seatbelts or safety gear such as helmets when using a bike or recreational vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>A head injury can lead to life-long issues, she added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTraumatic brain injuries can be complex and can present with a variety of symptoms and disabilities. \u00a0These symptoms can include mild or severe chronic headaches, dizziness, memory issues or difficulty thinking and attention deficit, as well mood swings and irritability. In severe cases, it can also cause limitation of movement of arms and legs, abnormal speech and loss of thinking ability.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Get regular check-ups<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9921 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/01\/16040855\/teenager_doctor_blood-draw.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/01\/16040855\/teenager_doctor_blood-draw.webp 1200w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/01\/16040855\/teenager_doctor_blood-draw-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/01\/16040855\/teenager_doctor_blood-draw-1024x683.webp 1024w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/01\/16040855\/teenager_doctor_blood-draw-768x512.webp 768w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/01\/16040855\/teenager_doctor_blood-draw-150x100.webp 150w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/01\/16040855\/teenager_doctor_blood-draw-200x133.webp 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany young women tend to think that they only need to go to doctors when they are sick; \u00a0if they have regular checkups, they can learn so much about their health and how to prevent issues later on,\u201d she said.\u00a0 \u201cStaying educated about their health enables them to keep in tune with their bodies, thus not neglecting their physical and mental health,\u201d which is essential to lifelong health care.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to find a physician you trust, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEstablish a health care relationship with a primary care physician early on and make sure you see her or him regularly,\u201d she advised. \u201cIf you have any concerns about your health, always consult a doctor early on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also, she said, \u201cknow and share your medical and mental health family history with your PCP so they can recommend appropriate screening tests early on if needed.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many women wait until they get pregnant for the first time or start having health issues before seeing a doctor on a regular basis.
