Jiggitts, a nurse in Outpatient Infusion Services at the UCHealth Memorial Hospital Cancer Center.<\/p>\n<p>Jiggitts, who has her own impressive set of credentials (RN, MSN, AOCN, CBCN), met Ducklow about five months after starting work at Memorial in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe made an impression on me then as someone who wanted the best for the patients at Memorial and the people of Memorial,\u201d Jiggitts said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2868\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2868\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2868\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/1970\/01\/28144738\/MemorialNurseAward.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/1970\/01\/28144738\/MemorialNurseAward.webp 600w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/1970\/01\/28144738\/MemorialNurseAward-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/1970\/01\/28144738\/MemorialNurseAward-150x100.webp 150w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/1970\/01\/28144738\/MemorialNurseAward-200x133.webp 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2868\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pat Ducklow, a Memorial nurse, is finalist for nursing magazine\u2019s \u2018Spirit of Caring\u2019 award.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cEvery encounter I have had with her has been positive,&#8221; Jiggitts said. &#8220;When I felt overwhelmed, Pat was there to help me get back in focus.\u00a0 I have watched her interact with patients and each and every time she has been able to connect with them and get to what is bothering them, see what they need and then be able to express that to the staff taking care of the patient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not like Ducklow has an easy job, Jiggitts said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPat has a service line that is huge \u2013 Acute Care.\u00a0 It has to be the largest service line in the hospital.\u00a0 The staff and patients who pass through that service line are so diverse.\u00a0 Pat fights for that service excellence that [management] keeps talking about in our safety huddle each morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In her nomination letter, Jiggitts wrote:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPat has been instrumental in getting Memorial\u2019s patient fall rate down. She is the chair of the Falls Resource Team, which has only two other nurses on it at any given time. \u2026 \u00a0The team is on call 24\/7 and helps the staff manage the high-risk fall population. Within the first quarter of the FRT being established, a significant decrease in falls occurred, with only two subsequent falls after 33 interventions \u2026 for a 94% success rate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jiggitts\u2019 nomination helped Ducklow become a finalist in the Spirit of Caring Award.\u00a0 And though Ducklow didn\u2019t win the top award, she\u2019s honored just to be a finalist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was one of six who were picked as finalists. It was a real surprise because I had no idea she had submitted it,\u201d Ducklow said.\u00a0 \u201cI was very flattered. It was wonderful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her honor is mentioned in the electronic version of the April issue of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myamericannurse.com\/\"><em>American Nurse Today<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ducklow found out about the honor when she received an email from the magazine informing her and asking for a photo.<\/p>\n<p>The email said, in part:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe thank you for \u2018going above and beyond\u2019 and your outstanding nursing care exemplifies the very best in the nursing profession.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have chosen 6 finalists from the hundreds of nominations we received.\u00a0 Your story will be included in <em>Nurse Today<\/em>, our twice-weekly e-newsletters as well as on the journal&#8217;s companion website, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myamericannurse.com\/\">www.AmericanNurseToday.com<\/a>. \u201d<\/p>\n<p>All finalists received 30 CE hours.<\/p>\n<p>Ducklow said that although she was surprised at becoming a finalist, she is not surprised by who nominated her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have known Marilyn about five years and first worked with her on the nursing quality improvement council when I was studying to become a clinical nurse specialist. She [Jiggitts] has been one of my mentors and supporters ever since I came to Memorial,\u201d she said. \u201cWe were co-workers that became good friends. \u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ducklow isn\u2019t sure why she was picked as a finalist but said she grew up with a strong work ethic and was taught that if she does something, she should do it well.<\/p>\n<p>Jiggitts said, \u201cI do hope that her immediate supervisors and all of upper management at Memorial realize just what a gem that they have in Pat.\u00a0\u00a0I wrote what I wrote because I wanted to honor her.
