She was pregnant with monoamniotic twins \u2013 the rarest of twins \u2013 and would need constant monitoring until their birth.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2743\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2743\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2743 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/1970\/01\/28144810\/baby4.webp\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/1970\/01\/28144810\/baby4.webp 600w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/1970\/01\/28144810\/baby4-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/1970\/01\/28144810\/baby4-150x100.webp 150w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/1970\/01\/28144810\/baby4-200x133.webp 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2743\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Amie Hollard, a physician who specializes in maternal fetal medicine, holds a baby during a celebration of staff who work in the Women\u2019s Pavilion at Memorial Hospital Central.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Naturally, she was worried &#8212; worried about the pregnancy, worried she wouldn\u2019t be able to see her husband and her toddler son as much, worried about being lonely.<\/p>\n<p>But Memorial nurses and doctors eased her concerns \u2013 introducing Walz to other mothers who also were in the Women\u2019s Pavilion for long-term stays and going the extra mile to make her feel at ease.<\/p>\n<p>Now she considers the medical staff friends, and recently Walz and other moms held a thank-you party for the staff of Women\u2019s Pavilion and Maternal-Fetal Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Several nurses from the Women\u2019s Pavilion attended the party, including Roxie Maul and Winona Bjork.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is so rewarding to get to see these babies. We spend so many hours watching them on the monitors, and to see them in person is so rewarding,\u2019\u2019 Maul said. \u201cYou really get to visit and get to know these ladies while they are with you.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>During their stay in the hospital, nurses are trying to give the babies as much time as possible in the womb. With each day on bed rest, the babies have a better chance for healthy beginnings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey become really special to us,\u2019\u2019 Bjork said.<\/p>\n<p>Walz said it was important to take time to thank the nurses and the doctors for their kindness during the long stay in the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. [Amie] Hollard, from the very beginning, always made me feel cared about. When she did rounds she plopped down in a chair in my room and talked to me about more than just my pregnancy. She cares about my emotional well-being,\u201d Walz said.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Hollard said she is grateful to see the moms again, and their children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are no words,\u2019\u2019 Dr. Hollard said. \u201cThese moms are such a big part of our lives, and we don\u2019t often get to see the babies after they leave. This is a joyful and happy \u2026 occasion.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Hollard also orchestrated introductions between Walz and other moms-to-be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI expect we&#8217;ll keep in touch for years to come,\u201d Walz said of Hollard. \u201cThe nurses are all spectacular in the Women&#8217;s Pavilion.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/1970\/01\/28144809\/Capture.webp\" alt=\"hug\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Laura Klein (right), a maternal fetal medicine specialist, hugs Loren Walz, a mom who spent several weeks on the Women\u2019s Pavilion at Memorial Hospital Central, before giving birth to twins.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Walz and the other moms recounted numerous times how the staff did something special, from orchestrating a Christmas party to helping them play a prank on a new nurse to bringing in donuts. Walz said the staff even turned one room into a mini cinema \u201cso all of us could escape our own rooms and watch a movie together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese ladies went above and beyond to care for me not only as a patient, but also as a person,\u201d Walz said.<\/p>\n<p>After nearly two months in the Women\u2019s Pavilion, Walz gave birth Jan 2. to sons Trygve and Ragnar. Then came several weeks in the NICU \u2013 her due date was Feb. 28 \u2013 but both boys are now home with their parents and big brother.<\/p>\n<p>Monoamniotc twins share a placenta and an amniotic sac \u2013 a circumstance that occurs in just 1 percent of twins. The risk of complications are high, given that cord entanglement can block blood flow form the placenta to the fetus.<\/p>\n<p>Walz said it was a special moment when she was able to reunite with the staff during the party May 18 and show them the twins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThough I have been through the hospital a few times and always stop in to say hi, it&#8217;s different to have a time to celebrate with them and appreciate them [during a time] that isn&#8217;t interrupting work.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Loren Walz remembers the day she \u201cchecked in\u201d to the Women\u2019s Pavilion at Memorial Hospital Central: Nov. 6, 2015.
