How do you transcend the now-too-familiar images in literature, film and art of emaciated concentration camp victims, stony-looking Nazi soldiers and cattle cars jam-packed with Jewish families being transported to unspeakable horrors?<\/p>\n<p>As the child of Holocaust survivors, artist Geoffrey Laurence felt compelled to create a response in painting to his feelings toward this horrific piece of history and, therefore, was forced to ask himself these questions.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/1970\/01\/28144930\/EXT_041316_Thosetheriverkeeps-scaled.webp\" alt=\"\u201cThose the River Keeps, 2010.\u201d\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cThose the River Keeps, 2010.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cEven though everyone is striving to embrace and forgive and understand [the Holocaust], at the same time there\u2019s this desensitization going on and people are not able to really feel it,\u201d said Laurence. \u201cI feel that painting allows me, at least, to try to say things that are not easily put in words, that are about a gut response.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His 20-year effort to paint \u201cwhat is inexplicable in words\u201d is on display at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucdenver.edu\/ACADEMICS\/COLLEGES\/MEDICALSCHOOL\/CENTERS\/BIOETHICSHUMANITIES\/AboutUs\/Pages\/Fulginiti%20Pavilion.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Art Gallery in the University of Colorado\u2019s Fulginiti Pavilion for Bioethics and Humanities<\/a> on the Anschutz Medical Campus. The \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucdenver.edu\/academics\/colleges\/medicalschool\/centers\/BioethicsHumanities\/ArtsHumanities\/Pages\/Geoffrey-Laurence.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ISWASWILLBE<\/a>\u201d exhibit, which opened April 3, includes eight of 10 pieces that are part of Laurence\u2019s Holocaust Series. They are riveting and haunting, and anything but commonplace.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Questions from thoughts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All the paintings in the series started with a single thought \u2013 from either a book, a photograph, a memory, or a concept, and then evolved into complex stories on canvas. The stories have a common purpose.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/1970\/01\/28144929\/EXT_041316_RiverKeepsStudy-scaled.webp\" alt=\"Study for \u201cThose the River Keeps.\u201d\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Study for \u201cThose the River Keeps.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThose paintings are questions,\u201d said Laurence. \u201cI painted them to make people ask questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His signature piece, \u201cISWASWILLBE,\u201d was one thought and then another. They came together as inspiration for a painting of a Nazi soldier in full uniform with his arm draped around a skeleton wrapped in a tallit (a Jewish prayer shawl), center stage with a spotlight encircling the pair.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI was thinking, my goodness, here I am trying to deal with the fact that I\u2019m a child of Holocaust survivors and I live with it every day and no matter what I do I will be in [the infamous German concentration camp] Dachau until I\u2019m dead and then I thought \u2013 isn\u2019t that interesting? Any time you say the word \u2018Jew,\u2019 the word \u2018Nazi\u2019 comes up immediately. It\u2019s like we\u2019re co-joined,\u201d explained Laurence. \u201cAt the same time how curious it is that we call it \u2018theater of war,\u2019 as if it\u2019s entertainment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Imagining the past<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/1970\/01\/28144929\/EXT_041316_nightgames-scaled.webp\" alt=\"\u201cNightgames, 2012\u201d\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cNightgames, 2012\u201d shows the disconnect between a Nazi soldier\u2019s home and work.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In \u201cThose the River Keeps,\u201d eight concentration camp victims are afloat on a wooden boat with a lit menorah to guide their way. Although Laurence says these eight people represent his family, he admits he has never seen photos of them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy relatives never got to say good-bye or get buried; no one said Kaddish [the Jewish prayer for the dead] for them,\u201d he said. \u201cThey are stuck in this in-between place and I felt I had to paint this painting. So I imagined what they would be like. I put myself in different roles of different camp inmates: the loony, the ill one about to die, the angry one.\u2026 Each character has a different facet of what I imagined.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although Laurence\u2019s parents were Holocaust survivors, his father having been at Dachau before he was freed, they did not speak about their experiences with Laurence \u2013 at all \u2013 while he was growing up. In fact, Laurence did not know for certain that he was Jewish until he was 46.<\/p>\n<p>Once his mother confirmed his long-held suspicion, Laurence became obsessed with learning about the Jewish faith, traditions and rituals. It was soon after he learned that he was Jewish that he began to work on what would become his Holocaust series.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Artistic mission<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although gallery owners and collectors discouraged him from working on such a macabre subject, saying that no one would show the pieces or buy them, Laurence felt \u201che had to paint it,\u201d if only for himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe work is not about making something to sell,\u201d he said. \u201cIt never has been. How could it be? I just want people to see the work. Zalkind is also the child of Holocaust survivors. The two compared notes of what it was like to be what they call second-generation Holocaust survivors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to know what first-generation survivors were like to be a second-generation survivor.
