Only two centers in the Western United States have implanted the device, which uses a small camera and microchip to stimulate the patient\u2019s optic nerve.<\/p>\n<p>Jamie Carley suffers from Retinitis Pigmentosa, a disease that causes cells in the retina to slowly die.\u00a0 For most RP patients, their vision gradually closes in on the sides.\u00a0 Many lose night vision first and eventually begin to lose their peripheral vision.\u00a0 Some, like Jamie, lose all of their vision. Last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/naresh-mandava-md-ophthalmology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Naresh Mandava<\/a>, Chair of Ophthalmology and Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-eye-center-anschutz-medical-campus\/\">UCHealth Eye Center<\/a>, implanted a microchip in Jamie\u2019s eye. Now she will begin rehabilitation to learn how to interpret and use her new vision.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1984\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/1970\/01\/28145242\/Jaime-Using-Device.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/1970\/01\/28145242\/Jaime-Using-Device.webp 641w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/1970\/01\/28145242\/Jaime-Using-Device-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/1970\/01\/28145242\/Jaime-Using-Device-150x100.webp 150w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/1970\/01\/28145242\/Jaime-Using-Device-200x133.webp 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\u201cRegaining even a little bit of my vision will make a huge difference in my life,\u201d said Jamie. \u201cBeing able to see the edges of doorways, stairs and sidewalks will make my life much easier, and I\u2019m really looking forward to seeing family members and fireworks again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, the Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System bionic eye implant offers the hope that patients who are blind from retinitis pigmentosa can regain small amounts of their vision. A pair of glasses with a camera wirelessly transmits video to the microchip implanted in the patient\u2019s eye.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe microchip that was implanted on Jamie\u2019s retina is a 10&#215;6 array of electrodes.\u00a0 That\u2019s 60 pixels of vision,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/scott-oliver-md-ophthalmology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Scott Oliver<\/a>, Chief, Vitreoretinal Surgery &amp; Diseases<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>for the UCHealth Eye Center. \u201cMost of us are used to millions of pixels on our cell phone, in multiple colors.<\/p>\n<p>With this device, we\u2019re restoring the basics of vision. She should be able to see outlines of objects and be able to perceive light and dark. Many of us take for granted the ability to be able to tell if a person walks into a room or if the sun is up. It\u2019s very exciting to restore this ability to our patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the coming months, Jamie\u2019s brain will learn how to interpret the new optical signals it is receiving, and her new sight will steadily improve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a tremendous honor to restore sight. You don\u2019t understand the value of vision until you\u2019re losing it or have lost it,\u201d said Dr. Naresh Mandava. \u201cWhen asked, people will tell you it is by far the most important sense.\u00a0 The device will significantly enhance Jamie\u2019s quality of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The UCHealth Eye Center is the largest and most advanced eye center in the Rocky Mountain region, and specialists from the University of Colorado School of Medicine care for patients with the most serious, vision threatening injuries and diseases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the only academic medical center in the state, University of Colorado Hospital and the UCHealth Eye Center offer our patients the most advanced treatments available.
