The Colorado Institute for Maternal and Fetal Health at University of Colorado Hospital will begin offering nitrous oxide by inhalation as an alternative method for pain relief for women in labor on October 13. Nitrous oxide can also be used for pain relief immediately after birth. Certified nurse-midwives, obstetricians and anesthesia experts will be available to help women decide which method of pain relief, if any, they would prefer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCountries around the world have used nitrous oxide for many years during labor and childbirth,\u201d said Certified Nurse-Midwife Jessica Anderson. \u201cWe\u2019re now offering this at University of Colorado Hospital because our patients have asked for it, and because we believe it can really help women get through contractions or procedures with less discomfort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/1970\/01\/28145442\/MEDIA-anschutz-campus-aerial-caption.webp\" alt=\"\" \/>The nitrous oxide gas is a blend of nitrous and oxygen, and unlike the continuous stream at a dental office, women can breathe the gas for a short time to help them through a contraction, and then remove the mask until it is needed again.<\/p>\n<p>Breathing nitrous oxide gives patients additional oxygen and also releases endorphins, helping to reduce the sensation of pain. Extensive research has shown there is no effect on fetal outcomes and minimal toxicity to the patient. The gas does not affect the woman\u2019s ability to push during labor.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are thrilled to offer another option for managing pain during labor,&#8221; said Dr. Cristina Wood, Obstetric Anesthesiologist at University of Colorado Hospital. &#8220;Nitrous oxide has been shown to be extremely safe for mothers and babies and allows for mobility in labor, just as our walking epidurals can do. We closely monitor all of our mothers and babies to ensure safety for all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re very excited to be the only\u00a0hospital in Colorado, and one of the few places in the nation, to offer the option of nitrous oxide pain relief to our patients,\u201d said Anderson. \u201cWomen now have many options for their birth plan. For instance, we can offer water births, un-medicated births, epidurals and now nitrous oxide. Ultimately, we want the soon-to-be new mom to decide what\u2019s best for her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All OB and newborn care services at UCH are part of the Colorado Institute for Maternal and Fetal Health (CIMFH).
