Photo by Kathryn Scott for UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Simulated blood oozed out of a mock wound as eighth-grade science students worked quickly to <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stopthebleed.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cstop the bleed\u201d<\/a> in a new lab at <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dsstpublicschools.org\/aurora-science-and-tech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aurora Science &amp; Tech<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was really gushing,\u201d said Jackie Morales, 14.<\/p>\n<p>She calmly pressed gauze into a gash in a squishy synthetic limb and pressed hard until the red liquid made from dyed dish soap stopped \u201cbleeding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then she giggled and screamed \u201couch\u201d as she and a partner practiced using tourniquets on their own arms.<\/p>\n<p>Their medical instructors taught the eighth-graders that in order to stop a real wound from bleeding, the tourniquet would have to be painfully tight. The practice tourniquets did hurt. But in that moment, Morales had a great vision of her future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d really like to study medicine. This was fun,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Her classmate, Mari Prudenzio, 14, had a similar reaction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt felt terrible,\u201d she said of the tourniquet. \u201cIt hurt like when they take your blood pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But she loved every minute of the \u201cStop the Bleed\u201d lesson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like the idea of saving lives,\u201d said Prudenzio, who hopes to become a radiologist someday.<\/p>\n<p>The girls\u2019 dreams \u2014 and those of hundreds of other students at the school \u2014 now will be much easier to attain.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_63732\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-63732\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-63732 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/04\/27180452\/AST-owls-tiny.webp\" alt=\"Aurora Science &amp; Tech students learn &quot;stop the bleed&quot; techniques with a UCHealth expert. Photo by Kathryn Scott for UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Aurora Science &amp; Tech high school<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Aurora Science &amp; Tech (AST) is one of just six schools in the country to be located on the campus of an academic medical center. The school at 2450 N. Scranton St. is just blocks north of UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital on the Anschutz Medical Campus. She will be head of the high school when it opens with ninth-graders this fall.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A middle and high school fostering medical professions<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The school\u2019s curriculum emphasizes science, technology, engineering and math \u2014 known as STEM courses \u2014 and Aurora Science &amp; Tech will offer a hands-on biosciences elective class.<\/p>\n<p>It will include case studies along with career exploration. Mendoza is eager to have students visit labs and the hospital while also bringing medical experts regularly to visit the school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s make it come to life,\u201d Mendoza said of health sciences.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/jean-kutner-md-mph-internal-medicine\/\">Dr. Jean Kutner<\/a> echoed Mendoza\u2019s excitement about the new partnership.<\/p>\n<p>Kutner is chief medical officer for UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital and also serves <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dsstpublicschools.org\/board\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on the board of DSST Schools<\/a>, Aurora Science &amp; Tech&#8217;s parent organization.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Teaching future leaders benefits the community<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Kutner was thrilled to celebrate the official opening of the new labs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUCHealth his very focused on our community, especially our community here on the Anschutz Medical Campus,\u201d Kutner said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_63736\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-63736\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-63736 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/04\/27180506\/Leaders-at-new-lab-tiny.webp\" alt=\"Leaders came together to dedicate the new Science + Innovation Labs at Aurora Science &amp; Tech. Photo by Kathryn Scott for UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Kutner envisions endless opportunities for students to have unique and unprecedented experience like visiting labs, watching surgeries to gaining access to high-paying health care jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Aurora Science &amp; Tech opened during the pandemic and students first filled in the halls for in-person learning in January of 2021. The school is located in one of the most diverse and high-need areas of Aurora. Approximately 70% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch and 85% are students of color.<br \/>\n<div class=\"su-callout-box col-xs-12 col-sm-6 right\" style=\"background-color:#dce4e7; color:#2e3b44;\">\n<h3>Aurora Science &amp; Tech on the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-at-university-of-colorado-anschutz-medical-campus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anschutz Medical Campus<\/a> is <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dsstpublicschools.org\/aurora-science-and-tech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one of six schools<\/a> in the U.S. located on a medical campus. The others are:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>DaBakey High School for Health Professionals, located on the Texas Medical Center Campus in Houston.<\/li>\n<li>Cleveland\u00a0School of Science and Medicine, located on the Cleveland\u00a0Clinic Campus.<\/li>\n<li>Columbia Secondary School, Adjacent to Columbia University in New York.<\/li>\n<li>Queens Gateway to Health Science Secondary School, adjacent to Jamaica Queens Hospital in New York.<\/li>\n<li>Geffen Academy at University of California Los Angeles.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very important to grow leaders in our own community. We want our workforce to reflect the community that we serve,\u201d Kutner said.<\/p>\n<p>Among other opportunities, Kutner anticipates providing certification programs for students who want \u201creal world skills\u201d in areas like phlebotomy or pharmacy technology in case they want to get health care jobs right out of high school. For other students who want to go on to college and beyond, connections with medical mentors will be invaluable.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier on Monday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/abbey-lara-md-pulmonary-disease-and-critical-care-medicine\/\">Dr. Abbey Lara<\/a> shared her path. A pulmonologist and critical care doctor at University of Colorado Hospital, Lara spoke during the AST morning meeting. She is the daughter of immigrants from Mexico and was the first in her family to go to college. She went on to earn her medical degree and is now UCHealth\u2019s medical director for health equity.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A lesson for middle and high school students: Learn &#8216;Stop the Bleed&#8217; techniques and save lives<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>During the &#8216;Stop the Bleed&#8217; lesson, students were wide-eyed as they listened to medical experts share stories about caring for hospital patients with bad wounds, like large pieces of glass stuck in their bodies.<\/p>\n<p>Teaching the hands-on class were four experts from University of Colorado Hospital: Kit Lien, trauma and burn manager, Marc Scherschel, senior direct of pre-hospital care, Desmond McNeal, emergency medical services manager, and Laurie Lovedale, program manager for injury prevention.<\/p>\n<p>While badly injured people typically need to get to an ER as fast as possible, bystanders often can provide critical care until an ambulance arrives.<\/p>\n<p>The UCHealth experts taught the students how to pack a wound with gauze or any material they have with them and press down hard if blood is spurting out uncontrollably.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPressure is going to save a person\u2019s life,\u201d Lien said.<\/p>\n<p>Added McNeal: \u201cThis is a science class. Let\u2019s talk science. When you\u2019re bleeding, your body can\u2019t apply a clot. Photo by Kathryn Scott for UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While the students got to practice with rolls of white gauze, Lovedale pointed out that if students find themselves alone with someone who is bleeding profusely, they have all the tools they need to \u201cstop the bleed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve got hands and clothing. You have the skills. You\u2019ve got what you need to save a life,\u201d Lovedale said.<\/p>\n<p>Scherschel taught the students to stay calm, even if a wound is bleeding profusely, like a garden hose spraying out water. Bystanders should use any material they have \u2014 like a hoodie or t-shirt \u2014 to soak up blood and locate the source of the bleeding, then press down hard.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also critical to call 911 and stay on the phone with emergency workers as long as necessary.<\/p>\n<p>If a person is bleeding internally, there\u2019s nothing a bystander can do but stay with the injured person. If a person has become impaled on an object or has been shot, it\u2019s important not to pull out the object.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if you get a bullet in your body?\u201d one student asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeave it there.
