Photo: UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t money that was needed, it was food,\u201d said Amy Dempsey, special events coordinator for UCHealth\u2019s Southern Colorado Region. \u201cPPSC staff also shared there had been an uptick in the number of students who had been using the pantry over the last couple months, so we knew there was a huge need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Collection bins were placed at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-grandview-hospital\/\">UCHealth Grandview Hospital<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-memorial-administrative-center\/\">UCHealth Memorial Administrative Center<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-memorial-hospital-central\/\">UCHealth Memorial Hospital Central<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-memorial-hospital-north\/\">UCHealth Memorial Hospital North<\/a>. Thanks to the generosity of staff, 700 items \u2013 canned soup and vegetables, macaroni and cheese, spaghetti sauce and pasta, beans, toilet paper, even salt-and-pepper shakers and can openers \u2013 were donated within just over one week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we dropped everything off, the team at PPSC was ecstatic,\u201d said Dempsey. \u201cThey showed us the nearly empty shelves and knew this food would help get their students through another week or two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dempsey said she hopes the drive raised awareness to the needs within the community and encourages others to help in the future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Urgent care \u201cfamily\u201d adopts Steamboat Springs family<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When Lauren Wright-Land, a patient access lead at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-urgent-care-steamboat-springs\/\">UCHealth Urgent Care \u2013 Steamboat Springs<\/a>, emailed her co-workers with the idea of adopting a family through a local Secret Santa organization, she was flooded with very positive and excited responses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone\u2019s willingness to participate reminded me how great of a team we have here,\u201d said Wright-Land. \u201cSo much of our lives are spent with the people we work with, so we try to look for ways to add some fun in our days and make an impact in our community at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-67385 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/12\/14151004\/Steamboatsized.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/12\/14151004\/Steamboatsized.webp 800w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/12\/14151004\/Steamboatsized-300x225.webp 300w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/12\/14151004\/Steamboatsized-768x576.webp 768w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/12\/14151004\/Steamboatsized-150x113.webp 150w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/12\/14151004\/Steamboatsized-200x150.webp 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/>This fall, staff decorated pumpkins for the front lobby. \u201cThe patients really got a kick out of it,\u201d said Wright-Land. A few months ago, a handful of staff also volunteered with <a href=\"https:\/\/routthumane.org\/\">Routt County Humane Society<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As Secret Santas, team members purchased a number of winter items from their family\u2019s wish list \u2013 snow boots and pants, warm jackets, hats and gloves, tennis shoes and an electric skillet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the kind of thing you do for others with people who are more than your coworkers \u2013 it\u2019s just what our YVMC family does,\u201d said Liz VandenHeuvel, patient access supervisor at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-yampa-valley-medical-center\/\">UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Santa and Mrs. Claus bring Christmas cheer to families in UCH\u2019s NICU<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Delivering presents around the world is a tall task. Photo: Sonya Doctorian, UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cA gift drive was started by an employee years ago as a way to do something for our infants and their families,\u201d said Lani Bowler, nurse manager at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-neonatal-intensive-care-unit-anschutz\/\">neonatal intensive care unit at UCH<\/a>. \u201cSanta and Mrs. Claus then deliver the presents to our families and take photos. It\u2019s definitely a morale boost, as it\u2019s hard to have a child in the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Close to 100 items are donated each year, including stuffed animals, books, clothing, blankets, hats and toys, and swings. The generosity of staff members has made a big impression on Bowler.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe majority of the event is planned by people outside our unit, for our unit. I\u2019m thankful for them and their willingness to contribute,\u201d said Bowler. \u201cWe become very close with our families and to do something special for them during this time of year is fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The gift of life in Northern Colorado<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When there\u2019s an increase in illness and snowy weather, there\u2019s typically a decrease in blood donation. Employees in UCHealth&#8217;s northern Colorado region, however, help to keep donations coming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know of at least 15 employees who have donated consistently this year at our various locations,\u201d said Anna Johnson, manager of UCHealth Garth Englund Blood Centers in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/garth-englund-blood-donation-center-fort-collins\/\">Fort Collins<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-garth-englund-blood-donation-center-loveland\/\">Loveland<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-garth-englund-blood-center-greeley\/\">Greeley<\/a>. \u201cThere aren\u2019t many ways outside of donating blood where you can anonymously and positively change someone\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A regular blood donation can be completed in as little as 30 minutes, whereas platelet donation takes a little longer, somewhere between 60 minutes and two hours.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_67386\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67386\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-67386\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/12\/14151101\/annaGreeleyblooddrivesized.webp\" alt=\"Anna Johnson, manager of UCHealth Garth Englund Blood Centers in northern Colorado, gives platelets recently, with help from UCHealth apheresis technician Korinna Smikahl.
