Summer is in full swing, and the warm weather means you can enjoy plenty of outdoor events and activities. For more than 75 years, the town has <a href=\"https:\/\/burrodays.org\/\">honored that legacy<\/a> with a free, family-friendly event.<\/p>\n<p>The tradition began with a daring burro race from Leadville to Fairplay. While the route has evolved over the years, the spirit remains the same. Today, racers dash to the top of a mountain pass and back, with a shorter course for those looking for a less intense challenge.<\/p>\n<p>But the fun doesn\u2019t stop with the burros. There is also an event featuring llamas, as well as some more silly competitions, like an outhouse race.<\/p>\n<p>Come for the history and stay for the fun.<div class=\"su-divider su-divider-style-default\" style=\"margin:15px 0;border-width:3px;border-color:#999999\"><\/div>\n<h2><strong>July 26: Steel City Arkansas River Festival (SCARF) &#8211; Pueblo<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_77675\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-77675\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-77675\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2024\/08\/15130405\/Waterworks-Park-upstream-3sized.webp\" alt=\"Pueblo has a new festival in July that celebrates its revitalized waterway and parks. Photo by Mike Sweeney for Pueblo Water.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The free <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pueblo.us\/3042\/Steel-City-Arkansas-River-Festival\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Steel City Arkansas River Festival<\/a>\u00a0highlights the beauty of Pueblo and the revitalized waterway that flows through it. With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/new-water-park-in-pueblo-colorado-brings-cool-relief-and-safety-to-arkansas-river\/\">recent improvements to the river corridor<\/a>, now is the perfect time to explore this enhanced space for recreation and connection. This is the first year for this festival.<\/p>\n<p>The festival kicks off with a build-your-own-boat race starting at the Nature Wildlife Discovery Center and finishing at Waterworks Park. The park will also feature vendors throughout the day. At noon, watch a surf competition at the whitewater park&#8217;s lower wave. At 3 p.m., community members are invited to decorate their crafts and dress in their favorite summer costume for a free community float and bike ride; Life jackets are required for the float. From 2 to 7 p.m., there will be food trucks, live music and hands-on demos at the whitewater kayak park\/Pillar Park.<div class=\"su-divider su-divider-style-default\" style=\"margin:15px 0;border-width:3px;border-color:#999999\"><\/div>\n<h2><strong>July 28-30: Yampa Valley Hot Air Balloon Rodeo &#8211; Steamboat<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_76160\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76160\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-76160\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/06\/20112759\/Balloon-2-courtesy-Yampa-valley-hot-air-balloon-rodeo-web.webp\" alt=\"Dive into the heart of an exhilarating experience as 35 elite pilots from across the nation take to the sky in their hot air balloons during the Yampa Valley Hot Air Balloon Rodeo. The event attracts balloon pilots and enthusiasts from all over the country and has become one of Steamboat\u2019s most iconic summer events. A 14er or \u201cFourteener\u201d is a mountain that exceeds 14,000 feet of elevation. Colorado has\u00a0<strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;font-weight: normal\">58<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>named 14ers, the most of any state in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;margin: 0in 0in 12.0pt 0in\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;color: #2e3b44\">Summer is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/want-to-try-climbing-a-colorado-14er-start-planning\/\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">best time to summit a 14er<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;color: #2e3b44\"> as most of the snow has melted, but the summer season is also known for afternoon storms. And hiking 14ers is extremely challenging and can be dangerous. Here\u2019s more information on the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.14ers.com\/routes_bydifficulty.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;color: #a6093d\">various levels of difficulty<\/span><\/a> of Colorado\u2019s 14ers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;margin: 0in 0in 12.0pt 0in\">Regardless of which one you pick, you\u2019ll <span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;color: #2e3b44\">want to start your hike as early as possible and depart the summit by noon at the latest. You don\u2019t want to be above tree line when a lightning storm hits. It\u2019s also essential to bring plenty of water and food along with warm layers and a dependable headlamp if you\u2019re starting your hike in the early morning hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;margin: 0in 0in 12.0pt 0in\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;color: #2e3b44\">If hiking a 14er feels too intimidating, there are two high peaks with roads to the top. They are Mount Blue Sky near Denver and Pikes Peak near Colorado Springs.
