And she volunteers as a peer counselor at Rocky Mountain High School in Fort Collins. She\u2019s also applying for admission to colleges. Nevertheless, no matter how busy she is, she always makes time \u2014 along with her mother, Melissa \u2014 to give back to where her life began 18 years ago.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cVolunteering at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-poudre-valley-hospital\/\">Poudre Valley Hospital<\/a> is full circle for us and such a privilege,\u201d Maya said. \u201cPVH is important and is a special part of our lives.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In 2005, when Melissa was 27 weeks pregnant with Maya, her first daughter, she was diagnosed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/diseases-conditions\/preeclampsia\/\">preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome<\/a> (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelets). Maya was born at UCHealth Poudre Valley Hospital, weighing only 1 pound, 15 ounces, and spent the next 77 days in the neonatal intensive care unit. She has dedicated time to speaking with other NICU families and encouraging them. In 2009, while 31 weeks pregnant with Sofia, her second daughter, Melissa was scheduled to give a talk when her health rapidly deteriorated. Sofia had to be delivered via emergency cesarean section. She weighed only 3 pounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\"><div class=\"su-pullquote su-pullquote-align-right\">Check out UCHealth&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/give-to-uchealth\/volunteer\/\">volunteer services<\/a> for volunteer opportunities. <\/div><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Sofia spent 47 days in the NICU. Years later, Melissa said, her experience in the NICU is ever-present; emotions are always there. She is forever grateful for her daughter\u2019s nurses and doctors and continues to feel that gratitude when volunteering.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cIt is my Zen time for the week,\u201d Melissa said. \u201cI know how much they value volunteers. It helps their workload and is very rewarding and purposeful.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">When Maya was old enough, she followed her mother\u2019s lead. Maya first applied to be a\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/give-to-uchealth\/volunteer\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">UCHealth \u201cvolun-teen\u201d<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202fprogram in the fall of 2019 but could not volunteer until 2022, when COVID-19 restrictions lifted. She now spends a few hours each Monday restocking drinks and snacks in hospital units.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Maya also returned to the NICU to help many of the same nurses who had cared for her as a tiny baby.\u202f In September 2022, Maya spent a day reading stories to the tiniest patients as part of the international\u202f<\/span><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.babieswithbooks.org\/readathon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Babies with Books Read-a-thon<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202fchallenge.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cIt was one of my favorite days,\u201d Maya said. \u201cTo sit and read with them was so meaningful.
