Photos by Sonya Doctorian, UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Supporting better mental health in Black communities: Project HairCare trains barbers and stylists<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Redwine is one of 26 Denver stylists and barbers who have received special training over the last year through a new program called <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/projecthaircare.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Project HairCare.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a joint project of the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/coloradoblackhealth.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colorado Black Health Collaborative<\/a> and the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/medschool.cuanschutz.edu\/family-medicine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Family Medicine<\/a> at the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/medschool.cuanschutz.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Colorado School of Medicine<\/a> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-at-university-of-colorado-anschutz-medical-campus\/\">Anschutz Medical Campus<\/a>, and received a grant from\u00a0the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/caring4denver.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Caring for Denver Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The aim of the program is to help stylists and barbers better support their clients\u2019 mental health and encourage people to seek help when necessary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe program helped me have a lot more understanding of mental illness,\u201d Redwine said. \u201cWe\u2019ve gotten formal training to understand what\u2019s going on when people are in crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn our work, people share their life stories with us. Some of them have really given up. We are able to talk with them and tell them, \u2018Hold on a minute, breathe through the stress, and life will get better.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve learned so much,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Redwine has had a few clients who were suicidal over the years. All made it through what Redwine has come to call \u201chours of no hope.\u201d She\u2019s found that if people can survive temporary periods of darkness, most can rebound.<\/p>\n<p>Redwine has particularly enjoyed the deep breathing exercises she learned through Project HairCare. The shop owner, mother and grandmother is busy seven days a week since she\u2019s also a pastor for Ministry Bible Church in Denver. He came for haircuts at the salon as a child with his mother and grandmother.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>From depression to anxiety and substance use, clients often confide in their barbers and stylists<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Doctors and psychologists have long known that people feel comfortable opening up about life\u2019s challenges while they\u2019re sitting in a stylist\u2019s chair or visiting a barber shop.<\/p>\n<p>So, medical experts teamed up to bring health care training directly to vital salons and barber shops in the community.<\/p>\n<p>The co-leaders for Project HairCare are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/alex-john-reed-psyd\/\">Alex Reed<\/a>, a psychologist with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-family-medicine-a-f-williams-central-park\/\">UCHealth A.F. Williams Family Medicine Clinic<\/a> in Denver\u2019s Central Park neighborhood, and Dr. Terri Richardson, a retired doctor and vice chair of Colorado Black Health Collaborative&#8217;s board. Reed is also <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/som.cuanschutz.edu\/Profiles\/Faculty\/Profile\/23117\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an associate professor<\/a> at the CU School of Medicine and is a team psychologist for the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/nuggets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Denver Nuggets<\/a> and the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coloradorapids.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colorado Rapids<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s been thrilled with the response to the program, and he and Richardson hope to expand Project HairCare.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe provide trainings that focus on depression, anxiety, PTSD, substance misuse and mental wellness and well-being,\u201d Reed said. \u201cWe give the stylists and barbers tools and handouts so they can talk with their clients about mental health issues.\u201d (<a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/projecthaircare.com\/resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Check out the resources and handouts that Project HairCare offers.<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>An unanticipated bonus of the program was that along with receiving training, the barbers and stylists loved forming a new community with each other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe program became a support group for the barbers and stylists themselves. They shared their own mental health issues,\u201d Reed said. \u201cThey provide a sacred space in the community for their clients. Louise said she has trusted only Rosalyn to style her hair for the past 30 years.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Redwine now has nine stylists working for her and has done hair for multiple generations of loyal customers.<\/p>\n<p>She loves coming to the glass-fronted shop that is full of women, plants and warmth.<\/p>\n<p>On one side of the salon, clients sit under dryers beneath portraits of heroic Black women. On the other side, stylists are busy doing hair as gospel music plays on speakers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing here makes me very happy. It gives me peace. It\u2019s my home away from home. Our clients make me laugh and smile,\u201d Redwine said.<\/p>\n<p>She started working at such a young age that she first focused on listening rather than doling out advice. But over the years, she became a mentor and sounding board for many clients.<\/p>\n<p>One customer, Tiana, calls her \u201cmommy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI call her \u2018mommy\u2019 in front of my own mommy,\u201d Tiana said with a laugh during a recent visit with her 16-year-old daughter, Jojo.<\/p>\n<p>Tiana said Redwine has counseled her through many phases of life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started coming here at 17. I\u2019m 44 now. I\u2019ve cried many tears in this chair. She listens and hugs me, and sometimes, there\u2019s some prayer,\u201d Tiana said.<\/p>\n<p>Her daughter, Jojo, slips into Redwine\u2019s chair right after her mom. Tiana\u2019s mother (and Jordyn\u2019s grandmother) is also a longtime client.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Like other young people, who tend to be more open about mental health struggles, Jojo thinks it\u2019s critical to offer help and support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t try to solve everything myself. I want to get an adult involved,\u201d Jojo says.<\/p>\n<p>Both mother and daughter think it\u2019s great that Redwine is participating in Project HairCare.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Having endured grief themselves, stylists and barbers can help their customers seek help<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While Redwine has a sunny disposition, she\u2019s gone through hard times herself.<\/p>\n<p>She lost her husband to cancer in July of 2020. While the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic forced her to close her business for a couple of months in 2020, Redwine said the time at home proved to be an unexpected blessing. She was able to be with her husband around the clock during the last months of his life.<\/p>\n<p>Having gone through grief herself, Redwine is quick to encourage others to get help if they\u2019re not able to move through their depression.<\/p>\n<p>One client is having trouble moving past her husband\u2019s death. She\u2019s isolating herself at home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy heart is grieving for her. I\u2019ve been recommending that she get some help. Beverly has been coming to the salon on East Colfax Avenue for 15 years.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She also said it was valuable for the Project HairCare stylists and barbers to open up to each other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne gentleman had a son who had passed away and realized he hadn\u2019t really grieved himself,\u201d Redwine said.<\/p>\n<p>Along with supporting clients, Redwine also has used her newfound skills to create a safer environment near her shop.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, a woman who was experiencing delirium came into the shop. Police soon followed, and Redwine was able to intervene immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a mental health issue,\u201d Redwine told the officers. \u201cIt was amazing how they stopped in their tracks. They backed up, and instead of getting arrested, she got help.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u2018We\u2019re right in their ears:\u2019 Stylists and barbers play a vital role in boosting mental health<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Health care doesn\u2019t happen just in hospitals or clinics, Redwine said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSure. We need our psychiatrists and our psychologists,\u201d Redwine said. \u201cBut a lot of times, people tell us stuff that they\u2019re too embarrassed to tell other people. We\u2019ll hear it first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Years ago, the stigma of sharing struggles seemed to be greater. But Redwine is very comfortable these days encouraging clients to seek help when they need it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really enjoyed working with the psychologists,\u201d Redwine said. \u201cMy vision for this program is that it needs to travel nationwide, especially in inner cities. People need to be trained so they can help the people around them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re really close with our customers. We\u2019re right in their ears,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow I\u2019m able to help people more. I\u2019m more patient.
