Photos by Todd Seip, UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Cesar\u2019s excitement could not be contained as he piloted his wheelchair onto the helicopter landing pad and circled the giant red aircraft that would take him skyward.<\/p>\n<p>His cursory inspection earned smiles and tears from his family as they watched from the edge of the pad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve flown before,\u201d Cesar said. \u201cI used to fly to Utah in airplanes but never a helicopter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At 25 years of age, Cesar has shown remarkable courage in his battle against muscular dystrophy. Taking a flight on a helicopter was one of his \u2018top 5\u2019 wishes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have muscular dystrophy, and it affects my muscles,\u201d said Cesar. \u201cMy muscles become smaller and weaker over time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m happy that I can do things that I want. I have a lot of wishes, and this is one of them. I\u2019m excited I can do it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Cesar met a flight crew from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/services\/emergency-care\/uchealth-emergency-medical-services\/uchealth-lifeline\/\">UCHealth LifeLine<\/a>. The crew went through a short pre-flight briefing explaining all the sights and sounds Cesar would experience on the special trip he had been dreaming about for months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see and hear military helicopters fly over my house all the time, and I wondered what it would be like to fly in one,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_74613\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74613\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-74613\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2024\/03\/13133609\/Cesar-and-Erick-onboardsized.webp\" alt=\"Cesar is joined by his cousin, Erick Avila, for a flight on UCHealth's LifeLine helicopter. During the flight, the crew took the two west to Canon City for a view of the Royal Gorge Bridge.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The flight was a cooperative effort of UCHealth LifeLine, Project Sol Flower, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-parkview-medical-center\/\">UCHealth Parkview Medical Center<\/a>, and Sangre de Cristo Community Care, a home health and hospice care organization that cares for Cesar.<\/p>\n<p>Planning for the trip started when Cesar\u2019s inpatient palliative care physician, Dr. Kristen Eisenman at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.childrenscolorado.org\/\">Children&#8217;s Hospital Colorado<\/a> first learned of Cesar\u2019s dream of a helicopter flight. She called a team at <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.projectsolflower.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Project Sol Flower<\/a> and a team member there called <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sangre.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sangre de Cristo Community Care.<\/a> Cesar\u2019s care team realized that he also needed a flight nurse, so UCHealth LifeLine stepped in to provide a helicopter with medical personnel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was in the hospital back in November, I asked the medical team if I could ride in a helicopter, and here I am today,\u201d Cesar said. \u201cI\u2019m looking forward to looking down over the reservoir, my house and the Royal Gorge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Project Sol Flower, a non-profit foundation based in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, grants bucket list dreams and experiences to young adults 18- to 26-years-old who are battling a life-limiting or life-altering illness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur co-founder, Kaydee Koch, lost her battle with cancer at the age of 20 but embraced living her \u2018bucket list\u2019 and used the experiences to stay positive and future focused,\u201d said Christy Grosboll, executive director and co-founder of Project Sol Flower. \u201cThis is at an age where they are just getting ready to begin their young adult lives, go to college, start a career path, maybe fall in love. Often, their diagnosis or disease brings those dreams to a sudden halt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKaydee understood the power of making bucket lists and checking off her goals and dreams. It is our pleasure and greatest desire to honor her legacy by\u00a0providing bucket list dreams to other deserving young adults. These memories are priceless for our dreamers and their families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cesar\u2019s sister, Mitzi Malagon, beamed with pride as her brother piloted the wheelchair to the helicopter\u2019s landing pad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are just so grateful that there are good people out there who help,\u201d Malagon said. \u201cThey wanted to make sure that Cesar was able to accomplish everything he wanted to do on his bucket list, and he mentioned that he wanted the experience of flying in a helicopter. We had no idea it would happen this fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cesar was accompanied on the journey by his cousin, Erick Avila.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do everything together,\u201d said Cesar.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_74614\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74614\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-74614\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2024\/03\/13133854\/cesar-inspectssized.webp\" alt=\"Cesar inspects UCHealth's LifeLine helicopter.\" width=\"400\" height=\"228\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-74614\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cesar inspects UCHealth&#8217;s LifeLine helicopter.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The 45-minute excursion took the pair over their house on the east side of Pueblo, then west to the Pueblo Reservoir and out over the Royal Gorge Bridge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was really a good flight,\u201d said Erick, who also experienced his first helicopter flight. \u201cHe loved it, and I loved it too. It was fun to see how excited Cesar was. He enjoyed the view and was able to point out all the different areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cesar\u2019s flight crew included pilot Troy Argabright, flight paramedic Courtney Avery, and flight nurse Andrew Bammesberger. UCHealth\u2019s LifeLine Airbus H125\u00a0helicopter, stationed at UCHealth Parkview Pueblo West Hospital, is part of a fleet of five\u00a0helicopters, one fixed-wing aircraft and three ground ambulances providing critical care transport services across the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsually, we are responding to critical care or traumatic accidents,\u201d said Avery. \u201cBut this is a great day for us. It\u2019s a happy flight and special for us to get to be a part of. I\u2019ve been looking forward to this flight. You get to interact and see someone really enjoy the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The H125 is a specially modified helicopter and is configured\u00a0with state-of-the-art medical equipment including cardiac monitor\/defibrillators, ventilators, medication pumps, handheld ultrasound and\u00a0CPR devices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur Lifeline helicopters are three times faster than a normal ambulance,\u201d added Avery. \u201cWhen we get called, speed and time are of the essence to saving lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cesar\u2019s flight was exhilarating, part of a whirlwind day for him and his family, full of sights, sounds, and memories that they will never forget.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really thankful for everyone involved that made this happen,\u201d said Cesar.<\/p>\n<p>Dreams do come true.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cesar\u2019s excitement could not be contained as he piloted his wheelchair onto the helicopter landing pad and circled the giant red aircraft that would take him skyward.
