Photos by Ryan Severance, UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He talks about cancer with the same intensity that he describes his love for the outdoors \u2013 seriously, emotionally and truthfully.<\/p>\n<p>After 25 treatments at the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-parkview-medical-center\/\">UCHealth Cancer Center \u2013 Pueblo,<\/a> Glen Livengood is cancer-free, and has an important message to tell: Men need to take their health care seriously.<\/p>\n<p>Livengood is no stranger to hard work. The cowboy hat and well-worn boots show a man who loves to be outside. An operations supervisor with Black Hills Energy and an avid outdoorsman, Livengood was not about to let a prostate cancer diagnosis slow him down.<\/p>\n<p>Livengood was born and raised in the Westcliffe, Colorado area, and he values the time he can spend with his family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love to hunt, fish and be outdoors,\u201d said Livengood. \u201cI\u2019m just a country person, so cutting wood, building fence, just being outside is my hobby. It\u2019s a lifestyle that I grew up in and it\u2019s important to me to be in that world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Livengood\u2019s cancer journey starts with a normal yearly physical and exam.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_75120\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75120\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-75120\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2024\/04\/09105309\/Livengood_5sized.webp\" alt=\"Glen Livengood has a message for men: Take your health seriously. Photos by Todd Seip, UCHealth.\" width=\"640\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-75120\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Glen Livengood has a message for men: Take your health seriously.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe doctor found a growth on my prostate,\u201d said Livengood. \u201cThe biopsy returned positive for cancer. But that\u2019s why we do it, that\u2019s why we get those checkups, to catch it early.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After follow-up testing, Livengood was referred to <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/suraj-singh-md-dabr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Suraj Singh<\/a> at the UCHealth Cancer Center <span class=\"TextRun SCXW69065744 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW69065744 BCX8\">\u2013<\/span><\/span> Pueblo. After the consultation, Livengood opted for radiation treatment using the Varian Edge Linear Accelerator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI met with Dr. Singh and was impressed that he was so straightforward and honest,\u201d added Livengood. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to undergo surgery. I was worried about the side effects and their impact to my lifestyle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Livengood was astonished with the accuracy and efficiency of the LINAC treatment, noting that at the end of the 25-treatment cycle and a two-week round of radiation seed treatments, he only felt some fatigue.<\/p>\n<p>Livengood noted that \u201cafter all that, I\u2019m 100 percent back to my normal life. And that\u2019s the value of the quality-of-life following treatment. It was just as important as getting the cancer out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Livengood doesn\u2019t hold back and let his ruggedness mask his emotions as he discusses his support team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am lucky to have a great family support structure. I\u2019ve had children with cancer, and my wife battled cancer. Now I have cancer \u2013 so we understand the fear of the cancer word.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His sons, daughters, spouse and his co-workers all rallied around Livengood during his diagnosis and cancer treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey all wrapped their arms around me and provided the love and attention I needed. Then I get here (UCHealth Cancer Center &#8212; Pueblo), and I find a second family. They are positive, upbeat, professional. They understood my fear and took great care of me.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_75118\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75118\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-75118\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2024\/04\/09105239\/Glen-L-1sized.webp\" alt=\"len Livengood is grateful for his caregivers at UCHealth Cancer Center - Pueblo.\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-75118\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Glen Livengood is grateful for his caregivers at UCHealth Cancer Center &#8211; Pueblo.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Livengood calls his cancer diagnosis a \u201cshot across the bow\u201d that forced him to reevaluate his priorities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had to realign my values,\u201d said Livengood. \u201cBut it has made my wife and I a better couple and my family is better intertwined and connected knowing that there is some fragility in our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow can you fail when you have that great of a support system in your life?\u201d said Livengood.<\/p>\n<p>He hopes his story will inspire other men to take control of their health care and get regular physicals and check-ups with their family doctor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMen, it\u2019s your job to get those yearly physicals, and get a prostate exam,\u201d said Livengood. \u201cDon\u2019t let that be a mental block to a cancer diagnosis that can\u2019t be cured. Don\u2019t let your ego get in the way of staying alive. Be proactive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Livengood plans to retire soon, and looks forward to spending more time with family, friends and getting back to more outdoors adventures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow I\u2019m cancer free \u2013 and plan to live my life to the fullest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>This story was first published in April 2024 but has been updated, and Livengood said his message to men remains unchanged.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>He talks about cancer with the same intensity that he describes his love for the outdoors \u2013 seriously, emotionally and truthfully.
