Eisenhower, upon presenting Raymond G. \u201cJerry\u201d Murphy with his Medal of Honor said: \u201cWhat is it\u2026something in the water out there in Pueblo? All you guys turn out to be heroes!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;Home of Heroes&#8221; moniker was first used in a speech in 1993 by then Colorado Rep. Scott McInnis as he spoke to Congress about the uniqueness of a city Pueblo\u2019s size having a record four recipients of the Medal of Honor claiming Pueblo as their hometown:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>William J. Crawford, Army, WWII<\/li>\n<li>Carl L. Sitter, Marines, Korea<\/li>\n<li>Raymond J, \u201cJerry\u201d Murphy, Marines, Korea<\/li>\n<li>Drew D. Dix, Army, Vietnam<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At the time of McInnis&#8217; speech, the four men were alive. Photo by Todd Seip, UCHealth<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Bronze artist David Dirrim and granite artist William Yates, both Colorado natives, were selected in 1998 to create the Pueblo Medal of Honor Memorial <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pueblohomeofheroes.org\/memorial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">outside the Convention Center on Heroes Plaza<\/a>. In addition to the statues of Pueblo\u2019s four heroes, the names of the over 3,500 recipients were incorporated on granite slabs mounted on the walls of the Convention Center just behind the sculptures. The interactive display features details, uniforms, and videos about each of Pueblo&#8217;s four recipients and the heroic action for which they received the Medal of Honor. Photo Ryan Severance, UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Center for American Values is located on the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk and is<a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.americanvaluescenter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> home to the nationally acclaimed Medal of Honor Gallery<\/a>, which features an extraordinary collection of inspiring portraits of nearly 150 Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, their stories, and other historic items. Co-founded by Pueblo\u2019s own Medal of Honor recipient Drew Dix, it was his personal desire for all generations to understand and never lose sight of the sacrifices made by civilians and veterans alike.<\/p>\n<p>Near the front entrance stands the World Trade Center Memorial, featuring steel donated by the New York City Fire Department in remembrance of the sacrifice and heroism on 9\/11\/2001.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Veterans\u2019 Bridge<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_75775\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75775\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-75775\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2024\/05\/08145942\/Veterans-Bridgeeee.webp\" alt=\"Eight granite plaques are placed on top of two large pyramids on the bridge's walking area. Photo Todd Seip, UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Veterans\u2019 Bridge is <a id=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/puebloveteransbridge.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">located in Gateway Park on the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk<\/a> in downtown Pueblo. This bridge is the only monument in the United States recognizing veterans of all military branches and duty statuses. It is also the first location to allow veterans&#8217; families to group together loved ones regardless of which branch of service they served in, or whether they served in peacetime or war. Over 7,000 names are prominently displayed on the bridge along with Pueblo\u2019s four Medal of Honor recipients, the five military branch seals, and the flags of both Colorado and the United States.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Next Chapter offers support and services for vets\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The transition from military service can be difficult for any Veteran or Veteran family member.
