Photo by DeAndr\u00e9 Smith, courtesy of the Southern Colorado Juneteenth Festival.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Colorado has a relatively new Juneteenth holiday, and it\u2019s a wonderful time for everyone to celebrate freedom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cJuneteenth is our freedom now and forever,\u201d said Jen Smith, co-founder of the <\/span><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.csjuneteenthfestival.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Southern Colorado Juneteenth Festival<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a free, three-day event that takes place in Colorado Springs over the weekend following Juneteenth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Smith, who helped create the event with her husband DeAndr<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00e9 Smith, said everyone is welcome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cJuneteenth is about everybody\u2019s freedom,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The name Juneteenth combines two words: June and nineteenth, and the holiday commemorates June 19, 1865. That was the day when the last enslaved people in the U.S. finally became free.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Emancipation Proclamation was supposed to end slavery throughout the U.S. in 1863, but it took more than two years for Union soldiers to free people in Texas, which had remained a Confederate Territory after the Emancipation Proclamation. Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas on June 19, 1865, and read a decree declaring freedom for more than 250,000 formerly enslaved people in Texas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Long celebrated in the Black community with parties, barbecues, concerts, parades and more, Juneteenth is now a celebration for people from all racial and ethnic backgrounds. And more and more states across the U.S. <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2023\/06\/09\/more-than-half-of-states-now-recognize-juneteenth-as-an-official-holiday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">now celebrate Juneteenth as an official holiday.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Juneteenth became <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/leg.colorado.gov\/bills\/sb22-139#:~:text=The%20act%20establishes%20Juneteenth%2C%20which,to%20this%20bill%20as%20enacted.)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a formal holiday in Colorado in 2022<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and it will be celebrated on June 19, of course.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are plenty of ways to celebrate Juneteenth in Colorado.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Where to celebrate Juneteenth in Colorado<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Colorado Springs<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Attend the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.csjuneteenthfestival.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Southern Colorado Juneteenth Festival<\/a>, which is free and takes place this year at the Citadel Mall in Colorado Springs on June 20, 21 and 22.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The event celebrates cultural diversity and unity through food, music and fun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s a platform for performances, poetry, dancing, stepping, flipping, break dancing and more. We\u2019ve done rap and R&amp;B,\u201d said Smith, who with her husband owns <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.onebodyent.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OneBodyEnt<\/a> and produces the event<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition to great entertainment, people will be able to enjoy delicious food.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Red is a special color for Juneteenth, so people celebrate with red foods. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There will also be barbecue, of course, along with foods from around the world, including Indonesian, Jamaican and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cFrom hearing about emancipation to enjoying good music, speeches from kids and laughter, we\u2019ll have a lot of fun,\u201d Smith said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Denver<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Denver residents have a rich tradition of celebrating Juneteenth. Barbecues, parades and concerts have commemorated Juneteenth since at least the early 1950s in Denver\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/history.denverlibrary.org\/news\/african-american-research-library\/juneteenth-other-independence-day\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">remarkable Five Points neighborhood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Dubbed the Harlem of the West, Five Points became a mecca for legendary jazz performers including <\/span><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/history.denverlibrary.org\/news\/events\/jazz-five-points-brief-history-part-one\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Duke Ellington<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/history.denverlibrary.org\/news\/denver\/jazz-five-points-brief-history-part-two\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Billie Holliday<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Five Points is named for the star-like spot where five streets come together near downtown Denver. Now Five Points is the place where Denverites gather to celebrate unity and freedom for all people during Juneteenth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.juneteenthmusicfestival.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Juneteenth Music Festival<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> takes place this year over the weekend before the official Juneteenth holiday on June 19.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Denver\u2019s Juneteenth celebration, long known as one of the largest in the U.S., also features <\/span><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.juneteenthmusicfestival.com\/parade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Denver\u2019s longest running parade<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. As many as 5,000 people are expected to march in the parade.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Fort Collins<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.focojuneteenth.com\/schedule\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Juneteenth festivities in Fort Collins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> take place the weekend after this year\u2019s Juneteenth holiday, with a youth night on Friday, followed by concerts and the main celebration on Saturday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Fort Collins Juneteenth celebration will feature a vendor market \u2014 led by Black and Brown business owners \u2014 along with food trucks, live entertainment, face painting, educational opportunities, a TikTok dance party and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Longmont<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The city of <\/span><a id=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.longmontjuneteenth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Longmont hosts its Juneteenth celebration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on Saturday, June 21 in Roosevelt Park.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Longmont\u2019s Juneteenth gathering focuses on freedom, a celebration of youth and brave new beginnings. The celebration features food, live entertainment and special musical guests, including Chrisette Michelle.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Learn more about the history of Juneteenth in Colorado and across the U.S.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Visit Denver\u2019s <\/span><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/history.denverlibrary.org\/blair\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Blair Caldwell African American Research Library, <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">located in Denver\u2019s historic Five Points neighborhood. The library is home to a remarkable collection that documents the history of Black people in Denver and Colorado.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Learn about the history of Juneteenth in the U.S. <\/span><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/nmaahc.si.edu\/juneteenth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Smithsonian\u2019s National Museum of African American History &amp; Culture <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">includes a wonderful collection of original documents and research resources related to Juneteenth. Of course, visitors can see this remarkable museum in person in Washington, D.C. But anyone can conduct research online.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Learn <\/span><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/nmaahc.si.edu\/juneteenth-digital-toolkit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">why the color red and red foods are special symbols of resilience and joy for Juneteenth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/nmaahc.si.edu\/juneteenth#First\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What happened on the first Juneteenth on June 19, 1865?<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/nmaahc.si.edu\/explore\/freedmens-bureau\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Search records of the Freedmen&#8217;s Bureau<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. During the initial hopeful period following the Civil War, Congress in 1865 created the Freedmen\u2019s Bureau to support formerly enslaved people. Unfortunately, following a period of great hope for newly freed Black people in the 1860s, <\/span><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/americanexperience\/features\/reconstruction-southern-violence-during-reconstruction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">violence and discrimination escalated during Reconstruction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, especially in southern states where discriminatory laws took hold during <\/span><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/americanhistory.si.edu\/brown\/history\/1-segregated\/white-only-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the Jim Crow era<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. It took nearly 100 years following the Civil War for U.S. leaders to provide promised civil rights to Black Americans.
