Even as an adult, whenever friends\u2019 furry family members approached, \u201cI was the one who backed away,\u201d Barrett said. When her son asked for a dog for his birthday every year, \u201cHe might as well have been asking for a pet grizzly bear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One patient changed all that.<\/p>\n<p>The elderly patient had no known family, other than a niece who also lived in a senior care facility. But the patient\u2019s \u201cbaby\u201d was a little white Maltese named Lulu. When the patient\u2019s condition deteriorated and her legal guardian asked if Lulu could come to LPH for a last goodbye, Barrett didn\u2019t hesitate to take all the necessary steps to make that possible. (She knew that <em>other <\/em>people liked dogs.) When the guardian began talking about what might become of Lulu when her owner was gone, something happened that Barrett still can\u2019t comprehend.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know what came over me,\u201d she recalled. \u201cI said, \u2018what if I took her?\u2019 it was like ghosts took over my body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Next thing Barrett knew, the guardian \u201ctakes Lulu and plops her in my arms. It was the first time I ever held a dog in my life.\u201d Then, the guardian snapped a photo. Barrett texted it to her husband and said: \u201cI think we should adopt this dog.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His response: \u201c\u2018Who are you and what have you done with my wife?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And that is how Lulu moved from a sedate life in an assisted living facility to a lively household where Barrett\u2019s energetic kids, 9-year-old Oren and 7-year-old Rami, fight over who gets to play with her.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_79092\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79092\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-79092\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2024\/11\/21075842\/ninalulu-web.webp\" alt=\"A photo of Nina Barrett, with her husband Raphael Crawford-Marks, daughter Rami Marks, son Oren Marks and Lulu.\" width=\"400\" height=\"385\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-79092\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nina Barrett, with her husband Raphael Crawford-Marks, daughter Rami Marks, son Oren Marks and Lulu.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cFor me, owning a dog was in the same category as walking on the moon or winning an Olympic medal, it was that unlikely\u201d Barrett said. \u201cI can\u2019t put into words how out of character this was for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The dog-owning part, sure. But the compassion and caring part \u2013 that isn\u2019t out of character at all.<\/p>\n<p>Lulu may be four-legged pay back for all the care Barrett has given others. Working in hospice and palliative care isn\u2019t easy. But coming home to Lulu\u2019s wagging tail and happy face is the ultimate stress relief. \u201cShe\u2019s become so dear to us. She makes us laugh every day. She\u2019s the thing I didn\u2019t even know our family needed.
