Photo by Mike Sweeney, for UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/daniel-lee-do\/\">Dr. Daniel Lee<\/a> stepped onto the ice and glided toward the center of the rink, his feet crammed into the same black skates he wore more than two decades ago as a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/usfigureskating.org\/\">U.S. Men\u2019s Figure Skating<\/a> team. It was a homecoming of sorts for Lee at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.puebloicearena.com\/\">Pueblo Ice Arena<\/a> on a recent Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>This is where he spent countless hours in 4:30 a.m. practice sessions as a child and teen, perfecting his spins, leaps and triple axel and triple lutz jumps in hopes of someday winning Olympic gold.<\/p>\n<p>On a recent winter afternoon, Lee moved effortlessly across the ice with a small group of skaters: his wife, Dr. Kourtney Lee, and their three children.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_87929\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-87929\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-87929\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/12084159\/Lee_Family_UC_Health_01-copy-web.webp\" alt=\"Lee and his family enjoyed a recent public skating session at the Pueblo Ice Area. Photo by Mike Sweeney, for UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s super fun, lots of memories,\u201d Lee said as he circled the ice during the rink\u2019s afternoon open skate session.<\/p>\n<p>He executed a small jump and then gracefully powered himself backwards, standing out from beginners who shuffled on their skates and hugged the boards.<\/p>\n<p>The Lees\u2019 oldest son, Cruz, 12, held hands with his 5-year-old sister, Calihan, as they moved across the ice. She\u2019s been bugging her parents for skating lessons for months. Lee hung onto the \u201cpusher\u201d that 3-year-old Collins used on her first-ever outing on the ice.<\/p>\n<p>It was all giggles and rosy cheeks in the Lee family as they cheered when Collins later ditched the \u201cpusher\u201d and skated with her dad, hand in hand.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been 22 years since Lee practiced on this rink and two decades since he retired from the sport that shaped who he would become after his skating career. The lessons he learned on the ice have served him well. Today, he works as a hospitalist at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-parkview-medical-center\/\">UCHealth Parkview Medical Center<\/a> and holds several leadership and committee positions for the hospital and UCHealth. He is passionate about the health care he provides for the people he considers friends and neighbors in Pueblo.<\/p>\n<p>But for a couple hours on that recent weekend day, he was just a dad skating with his family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t get much better than this,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is what it\u2019s all about.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_87930\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-87930\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-87930\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/12084401\/Lee_Family_UC_Health_03-copy-web.webp\" alt=\"Lee was the U.S. Novice Men's National Champion in 1997 and was training for the Olympic figure skating team before injuries ended his skating career in 2004. Photo by Mike Sweeney, for UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Lee takes to the ice at age five and excels quickly<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Lee was five when he joined a \u201clearn-to-skate\u201d program at <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.broadmoor.com\/historical-timeline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Broadmoor hotel\u2019s World Arena<\/a>, the storied skating rink and club in Colorado Springs that launched the skating careers of such legends as <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/dick-button-dead-figure-skating-892b9b339e96411499c8864d8737b219\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dick Button<\/a>, <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/isu-skating.com\/figure-skating\/skaters\/jeremy-abbott\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeremy Abbott<\/a>, <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.teamusa.com\/hall-of-fame\/hall-of-fame-members\/peggy-fleming-jenkins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peggy Fleming<\/a> and <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/sportswomenofcolorado.org\/jill-trenary-1990\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jill Trenary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Not long after, his family moved to Pueblo, where his parents purchased a dry-cleaning business and liquor store.<\/p>\n<p>Lee took to skating, and by the time he was nine, he was competing in figure skating competitions \u2013 first regionals and then sectional competitions \u2013 which served as a gateway to national championship events.<\/p>\n<p>Lee\u2019s life revolved around available ice. Each weekday began with a 4:30 a.m. skating session at the Pueblo ice rink. From there, Lee went to school in town. Most days, he got out of school an hour early for the 40-minute drive to Colorado Springs, where he practiced at The Broadmoor from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Lee did homework on the drive home before starting the routine again the next morning.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_87931\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-87931\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-87931\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/12084703\/Lee_Family_UC_Health_11-copy-web.webp\" alt=\"As a child, Lee spent hours on the ice in Pueblo and Colorado Springs, and he ranked among the top 30 men's figure skaters worldwide in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Photo by Mike Sweeney, for UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lee was competing at rinks all over Colorado \u2013 Denver, Vail and Colorado Springs \u2013 and also training at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. In 1997, at age 14, he won the U.S. Men\u2019s Novice Championship, earning him a spot on the men\u2019s junior-level team. The next year, he placed fourth at the U.S. Men\u2019s Junior Championship competition and claimed his spot on the U.S. Figure Skating team. He placed fourth again in 2000.<\/p>\n<p>Despite Lee\u2019s focus on skating, his parents never let the sport overshadow the importance of school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEducation was always priority No. 1,\u201d Lee said.<\/p>\n<p>Lee\u2019s parents wanted him to be as \u201cnormal\u201d as possible.<\/p>\n<p>That meant attending public school \u2013 though teachers always excused him from physical education classes.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Lee\u2019s skating career was taking him all over the world: from Norway to Ukraine, Mexico, the Czech Republic, Hungary and more. He ranked among the top 30 male skaters in the world.<\/p>\n<p>His goal?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was always the Olympics,\u201d Lee said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-youtube su-u-responsive-media-yes\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jJrHxsEPiWg?mute=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture\" title=\"Former Figure Skating Olympic Hopeful | Dr. Daniel Lee of Pueblo | UCHealth Today\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>He was on the U.S. men\u2019s team from 1997 to 2004. But a trip to the Olympics would remain just out of reach for Lee, even as he competed with such big names as <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.teamusa.com\/profiles\/johnny-weir\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Johnny Weir<\/a> and <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.teamusa.com\/profiles\/evan-lysacek\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Evan Lysacek<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s such a fickle sport because you get one shot,\u201d Lee said.<\/p>\n<p>One big mistake in any part of the performance, for example, can drop a skater to 10<sup>th<\/sup> place or lower.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour dreams are shattered for that year,\u201d he said. \u201cOnly so many people get to succeed at the highest level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Injuries began to hamper Lee\u2019s skating when he was on the men\u2019s senior team. He had to have knee surgery and broke his right ankle twice, leading to ankle surgery. In 2004, he competed at the U.S. Senior Men\u2019s Championships but finished 18<sup>th<\/sup>, out of contention for the Olympic team. That\u2019s when Lee decided to hang up his skates. Photo by Mike Sweeney, for UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>The rigors of skating translate well to medical training<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When his skating career ended, Lee focused on getting his bachelor\u2019s degree and helping his father run their store. While training, he had taken classes at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. Next, he enrolled at Colorado State University Pueblo and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Though injuries ended Lee\u2019s skating career, the doctors and physical therapists who helped him over the years inspired his interest in medicine. In 2011, Lee enrolled at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Spartanburg, South Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>The rigors of a figure skating career served Lee well in medical school. He had a strong work ethic and good organizational skills and knew how to set \u2013 and achieve \u2013 his goals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAcademics actually came easily in the sense that I was always willing to work really, really hard,\u201d he said. \u201cI was always organized, and I knew the importance of work \u2013 that building small steps every single day culminates into a bigger goal that you\u2019re trying to achieve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After graduating from medical school, Lee returned home to Pueblo and did his residency in internal medicine at Parkview Medical Center.<\/p>\n<p>Residency was hard, but Lee once again leaned on his skating experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe long grueling hours were kind of like training for skating,\u201d he said. \u201cHonestly, I really missed the grind of sport. Photo by Mike Sweeney, for UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Lee finds love in a fellow athlete, and doctor<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While he was training at Parkview as a resident, Lee crossed paths with another doctor-in-training, one who would become his wife. Kourtney Lee was in her fourth year of medical school at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine \u2014 two years behind Lee \u2014 when she did a rotation at Parkview and reconnected with Lee.<\/p>\n<p>They soon realized that they had more than medicine in common. Kourtney was a competitive athlete, too, in cross-country and indoor and outdoor track in college. After that, she ran sub elite times in road races and triathlons. She too had an interest in health care and decided to go to medical school.<\/p>\n<p>They married in 2018, and Kourtney now works on the Parkview Internal Medicine Residency faculty.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_87935\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-87935\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-87935\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/12085347\/Lee_Family_UC_Health_07-copy-web.webp\" alt=\"Kourtney Lee with her daughter. Photo by Mike Sweeney, for UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After moving to Pueblo, she soon learned what the community means to Lee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe grew up here,\u201d she said. \u201cHis family and lifelong friends are here. He\u2019s very invested in Pueblo and the residents, the hospital as a whole and the care that\u2019s provided. A lot of the patients here are people who know him and his family.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A rise into leadership gives Lee a broader influence over care at Parkview <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>After he completed his residency in 2018, Lee became a hospitalist. He describes hospitalists as the quarterbacks of inpatient care, coordinating a patient\u2019s care during their hospital stay. Being a hospitalist requires knowledge of various specialties, from cardiology to pulmonology to oncology and more. Hospitalists work with large teams on behalf of patients.<\/p>\n<p>That collaboration set Lee up for what has become a steady advance in leadership roles at Parkview and at UCHealth.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, he became medical director of the Parkview Medical Center hospitalist group. Lee said he had worked hard to develop good relationships with the doctors, and he hoped his connections would help the group as a whole. He worked to build a cohesive and collaborative team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to be one of the best hospitalist programs, not just in the UCHealth system, but one of the best hospitalist programs based in any community in the United States,\u201d he said. \u201cSo, if you\u2019re coming to Parkview and you\u2019re receiving care, you know you\u2019re going to be receiving the best care you could get anywhere in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_87936\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-87936\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-87936\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/12085606\/D_Lee_Parkview_05-copy-web.webp\" alt=\"Lee has taken on a number of leadership positions with UCHealth and at Parkview Medical Center in Pueblo. Photo by Mike Sweeney.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Lee leads efforts to reduce sepsis at Parkview<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The list of Lee\u2019s accomplishments is long, including being recognized in December as Physician of the Year at Parkview. Other Parkview doctors nominated him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has been instrumental and a key in the transformation of Parkview\u201d since it joined UCHealth two years ago, said Dr. James Caldwell, Parkview chief medical officer.<\/p>\n<p>Lee serves on a variety of committees for Parkview and UCHealth, some of which tackle complex, overlooked areas, including how doctors document notes in patient charts. Lee developed a program for virtual overnight doctor coverage for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-parkview-pueblo-west-hospital\/\">UCHealth Parkview Pueblo West Hospital<\/a>, ensuring better nighttime care for patients. Perhaps Lee\u2019s biggest accomplishment has been his work on UCHealth\u2019s efforts to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/uchealth-reduces-sepsis-deaths-with-virtual-monitoring\/\">save more lives from sepsis<\/a> through virtual monitoring and improved care coordination. The results at Parkview have put the hospital in the top 10<sup>th<\/sup> percentile of hospitals nationwide for reducing deaths from sepsis, a life-threatening complication of infection.<\/p>\n<p>Lee makes sure he stays close to patient care, too, despite his growing administrative roles. He recently worked a stint of 10 overnight hospitalist shifts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t ever want to lose my roots in medicine,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Caldwell praised Lee for what he called \u201cfantastic patient care and passion for leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is one of the most selfless and devoted physicians that I have ever had the opportunity and pleasure to work with, and those two traits have allowed him to excel,\u201d Caldwell said. \u201cAt every level, he\u2019s just an exceptional person.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_87938\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-87938\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-87938\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/12090037\/Lee_Family_UC_Health_05-copy-web.webp\" alt=\"Lee takes a selfie with daughter Collins, during her first time on ice skates. Photo by Mike Sweeney, for UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Building a residency program for Pueblo<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Now, Lee is working to strengthen the residency program that brought him back to Pueblo after medical school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are his patients, and he wants Parkview to be the best it possibly can be,\u201d Caldwell said.<\/p>\n<p>Lee recently became the director of the hospital\u2019s internal medicine residency program.<\/p>\n<p>He wants to improve the program so residents will learn as much as they can during their training. Lee also wants to help Parkview\u2019s program stand out to more than 3,000 applicants who apply each year. His vision is a residency program that will develop, nurture and retain doctors who want to work alongside him in his hometown.<\/p>\n<p>In residency, doctors focus on what Lee calls \u201cthe meticulous details of medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But residents don\u2019t always learn what makes a hospital run well, he said. He plans to include instruction on the metrics that hospital leaders regularly analyze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat helps bridge the gap from being a trainee to being a full-blown attending doctor,\u201d he said. \u201cOtherwise, one day you\u2019re training, you graduate, and the next day, all of the responsibility is on you. Photo by Mike Sweeney.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lee also wants to beef up wellness programs and events for residents and their families during what is a stressful period for them all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the community that raised me,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s why it was really important for me to take over as the director of the residency program. I want to have an integral part in training these amazing physicians and try to retain them in our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kourtney said her husband has \u201ca mental toughness and unmistakable drive for excellence.\u201d She praises his \u201ccalm steadiness and genuine commitment to showing up for the people he loves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has a vested interest in Pueblo and southern Colorado,\u201d she said. \u201cHe loves when someone that he has known his whole life needs care, and he can be that person for people in the community. Photo by Mike Sweeney, for UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Lees got their first ski runs of the winter at Steamboat ski resort in late November and hope to log another 50 ski days this season. Lee said his retirement plans include working on a ski patrol.<\/p>\n<p>Skiing is a family affair for the Lees. Calihan is a fan of <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.olympics.com\/en\/news\/mikaela-shiffrin-numbers-american-skier-career-records\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mikaela Shiffrin<\/a>, who recently won her 10<sup>th<\/sup> World Cup, and wears a \u201cfaster than the boys\u201d sticker on her ski helmet. Lee figures he has one more year before Cruz surpasses him on the slopes. Collins is just starting to ski on her own.<\/p>\n<p>At the Pueblo Ice Arena, Cruz declared that skiing is better than ice skating. Calihan wants her father to be her skating coach. And Collins was grinning ear to ear as she rounded the ice with her big brother, mother and father. Lee also loves gravel biking and rode in the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.grassrootsgravel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grassroots Gravel<\/a> race that takes place each October in Pueblo.<\/p>\n<p>And when the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.olympics.com\/en\/milano-cortina-2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Olympic Winter Games in Italy<\/a> begin on Feb. 6, Lee and his family will be watching.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like a holiday in our house,\u201d Kourtney said.<\/p>\n<p>Lee will marvel at the U.S. Figure Skating team and the ever-increasing difficulty of their moves. And who can blame him if he reminisces just a bit about his time in the figure skating limelight?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy favorite jump was the triple axel, and that was the pinnacle,\u201d he said. \u201cNo one ever thought a quadruple was possible.
