The infusion\u00a0clinic\u00a0at\u00a0<\/span>UCHealth Broomfield Hospital<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is\u00a0a single room\u00a0on the second floor, tucked\u00a0down a\u00a0quiet\u00a0hallway. Patients spend anywhere from 15 minutes to\u00a0five\u00a0hours\u00a0receiving\u00a0treatment, working\u00a0with staff who ensure their visits are as pleasant and efficient as possible.\u00a0So, when Assistant Nurse Manager\u00a0Lexy\u00a0Perou received\u00a0word\u00a0that a patient scheduled for an infusion\u00a0had been waiting for more than an hour, she jumped into action.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAfter the nurses alerted me of the situation,\u00a0I dropped\u00a0off\u00a0my\u00a0meeting and came downstairs\u00a0to\u00a0speak with the patient,\u201d\u00a0Lexy\u00a0said.\u00a0\u201cI apologized, and while she\u00a0was very understanding\u00a0of the situation,\u00a0she\u00a0also made it clear that she\u00a0needed the infusion treatment that day\u00a0because\u00a0she was scheduled to leave town.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The infusion\u00a0clinic\u00a0was at capacity, so\u00a0Lexy\u00a0found an empty patient room next door and got to work\u00a0converting the space\u00a0into a more\u00a0comfortable and inviting area.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She\u00a0moved\u00a0the bed\u00a0aside,\u00a0repositioned the couch,\u00a0set up the recliner\u00a0with a side\u00a0table\u00a0and gathered the necessary supplies.\u00a0Once ready,\u00a0Lexy\u00a0helped the patient get settled,\u00a0and\u00a0then\u00a0promptly\u00a0administered the infusion.\u00a0It never crossed her mind to have someone else do it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe nurses were busy\u00a0in\u00a0the moment,\u00a0and it was a situation where we had to pivot to take care of the patient\u2019s needs,\u201d\u00a0Lexy\u00a0said.\u00a0\u201cI\u00a0felt terrible that she had been waiting,\u00a0and I didn\u2019t\u00a0want her to feel like she had been forgotten.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In chatting with the patient,\u00a0Lexy\u00a0learned that\u00a0she\u00a0also worked in health care and\u00a0felt\u00a0that\u00a0this\u00a0background and\u00a0experience may have added to\u00a0her\u00a0gratitude\u00a0and\u00a0appreciation\u00a0of the\u00a0circumstances.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lexy\u00a0also credits the team for their open communication and for quickly alerting her\u00a0of\u00a0the situation,\u00a0which enabled\u00a0her\u00a0to\u00a0care for the patient in the best way possible.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Later that day, the patient called\u00a0back\u00a0to\u00a0praise\u00a0Lexy\u2019s actions and\u00a0to\u00a0thank her for\u00a0the kindness and compassion she showed.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact that it was so\u00a0meaningful\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0patient to have been seen\u00a0feels\u00a0really\u00a0special,\u201d said\u00a0Lexy. \u201cI\u00a0knew that\u00a0if we could find a way to accommodate\u00a0her,\u00a0we should.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the clinic coordinators,\u00a0Rhonda Borrego,\u00a0nominated\u00a0Lexy\u00a0for a Celebrating You award,\u00a0highlighting\u00a0the\u00a0exceptional leadership and compassion\u00a0she\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0that day\u00a0through\u00a0timely, patient-first care.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI cannot express how much it meant for this patient to be treated like family and taken care of right away,\u201d Rhonda said in her nomination. \u201cThank you for putting our patient first. You made\u202fa lasting impression\u202fon her that she will never forget.\u201d\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
