I feel very fortunate to have trained in the era of traditional surgical education, and learned the fundamental principles that apply in any surgery. I was also an early adapter into laparoscopic surgery. That has now evolved into robotic surgery, which gives us the ability to perform amazingly complex surgeries through very small incisions, with less pain and quicker return to full activity. But all of these are just tools- the art of surgery is in deciding which of the tools to apply in a given situation. Each patient is different, and each surgery is different. I enjoy spending time with my patients to explain the medical situation, explain their options, discuss the pros and cons of each, and tailor the surgical approach to the specific needs and desires of each patient. I understand that being sent to see a surgeon is an anxious time. I find that most patients appreciate open, honest, direct conversations. I take my responsibility to my patients very seriously and enjoy making genuine connections with each one.
My wife Heather and I have three children – Ryan, Connor and Quinn. We are also parents of Tula, a 125 pound Bernese Mountain dog who thinks she is a lap dog! When not in the hospital or at home, I can be found on the course or harassing trout in a river.
