A head and neck cancer diagnosis is understandably a terrifying event in a patient’s life for many different reasons. My role extends well beyond the technical aspects of cancer surgery and reconstruction. A big part of that role is education, as I want my patients to have at least a basic understanding of the disease process affecting them, the treatment plan and what to expect after treatment. As a multidisciplinary team, we aim to inspire trust and assuage fears through education, finding an optimal treatment plan and presenting our recommendations to patients for further discussion. Historically, head and neck cancer surgery was often invasive, disfiguring and resulted in poor functional outcomes. Current surgical methods are still focused on completely clearing cancer as a primary objective, but there is a much greater emphasis on maintaining function and aesthetics to improve the quality of life after surgery. Following a residency in otolaryngology – head and neck surgery, I completed a 2-year advanced surgical program in head and neck cancer surgery with microvascular reconstruction training. As such, I have been trained in and can offer patients the most up-to-date surgical care combined with organ preservation principles. I hope my patients regard me not only as a surgeon but as an ally in their treatment journey, surgical or non-surgical. No patient should feel that they are fighting their disease or coping with the side effects of treatment by themselves. Whether it be answering additional questions, meeting with family members or talking about anything but medical issues, I am honored to help in any way I can.
