To help cancer patients in rural areas, this medical team does the driving, bringing treatments to people in their hometowns

Each month, a Colorado oncologist and team bring cancer care to rural towns — cutting travel time and breaking barriers to treatment.

Every month, Dr. Robert Hoyer, an oncologist with UCHealth in Colorado Springs, and his outreach team travel to Trinidad and Lamar, providing crucial oncology care to rural patients who would otherwise face long drives or, in some cases, go without treatment.

The team consists of a nurse practitioner, a scheduler, and a medical assistant, and they spend one week in these communities, offering clinic visits as well as infusion and chemotherapy services at local hospitals. Together, they care for up to 150 patients during that week.

During their visits, the medical providers stay at a local hotel, spending time away from their families to ensure that patients can access specialized cancer care close to home. Their dedication helps eliminate the need for patients to travel three hours or more to medical centers located along the Front Range, significantly impacting the lives of those in rural communities.
